Acetyl-L-carnitine, also known as ALCAR, is an acetylated form of L-carnitine, a supplement often used to perform athletic performance. Carnitine molecules are generally used in the body in the process of transporting fatty acids to your cells’ mitochondria. From there, the fatty acids are broken down to produce energy, hence why athletes include carnitine into their diets. As a nootropic supplement, acetyl-L-carnitine HCL powder offers a variety of potential uses and benefits for all aspects of your personal and cognitive health.
L-carnitine is a compound that is produced naturally in the human body in the kidneys and liver. The compound is then transported to the heart, brain, and other tissues. L-carnitine can also be obtained from certain food sources, primarily protein like lean cuts of beef and pork, poultry, and some seafood. L-carnitine can also be found in dairy products, like cheese and ice cream.
However, when taken as a supplement in its plain form, L-carnitine has low oral bioavailability, meaning the body has trouble absorbing much of the compound that you take. The acetyled form allows for much easier absorption.
L-carnitine and acetyl-L-carnitine share similar chemical structures, but their effects differ. L-carnitine is primarily used as a supplement for increasing physical energy and potentially reducing weight, while acetyl-L-carnitine HCL benefits are much wider and variegated.
ALCAR is used to potentially boost the metabolic energy of your brain cells, which may result in an overall improvement to your cognitive processes. ALCAR breaks down and can form with choline to form acetylcholine, an important neurotransmitter in the brain and central nervous system.
Studies suggest that this increased cholinergic activity in the brain may lead to a variety of cognitive benefits, including:
Acetyl-L-carnitine may also influence higher levels of mental energy, concentration, and focus. Some people taking this supplement also report experiencing clearer thoughts and greater alertness and perceptual awareness.
Studies have shown that acetyl-L-carnitine may act as a potent antioxidant. Antioxidants are designed to remove toxins and neutralize free radicals, which cause oxidative stress and damage to cells.
Some studies also point to ALCAR’s possible neuroprotective properties, including treating injuries to the nerves and spinal cord and reducing cerebral ischemia.

Best ALCAR I have tried. It gives the usual effects of ALCAR, but this powder is finer and seems to taste slightly better than my usual ALCAR powder sources. Strangely, I don't notice any GI side effects of taking 5g+ of this ALCAR, whereas I struggle to take 2 grams of the coarser powders Unknown on 30th May 2015
