Caffeine is a common compound associated with coffee and colas, while L-theanine is a natural amino acid found in tea leaves and mushrooms. Combining the two compounds in a nootropic stack or taking caffeine + l-theanine capsules has become more popular, offering a variety of potential benefits to your physical health and mental abilities.
Caffeine is commonly used to temporarily increase alertness and overall performance and efficiency. While it doesn’t technically qualify as a nootropic, caffeine has still been shown in certain studies to improve your brain’s functions and your own mental performance. Unfortunately, caffeine can come with some severe drawbacks, namely jitteriness, increased anxiety, sleep problems, and the inevitable crash when its effects wear off.
L-theanine is a natural compound. It is an effective nootropic that can stimulate the production of neurotransmitters while interfacing with other neuroreceptors. In smaller doses, L-theanine has been found to improve mental focus, while higher doses of it may create a significant calming effect.
Stacking L-theanine with caffeine can balance out some of those drawbacks while boosting the effects of both. This combination wasn’t just a manmade discovery either. Caffeine and L-theanine naturally appear together in green tea leaves, which have been brewed and enjoyed for providing relaxation and clear focus all at once.
Combining caffeine and L-theanine can amplify and refine the effects of the two compounds to bring out the best of both. L-theanine’s inhibitory presence prevents the hyperactivity and restlessness associated with using caffeine. Studies show that the stack’s results on cognition are significant.
L-theanine on its own has been shown to promote GABA production. GABA, or gama-aminobutyric acid, is a neurotransmitter that acts as the main inhibitor in the human central nervous system. GABA can block stress messages, reduce neuronal excitability, and generate alpha waves. Alpha waves are associated with a state of extreme calm and relaxation.
Preliminary studies suggest that caffeine provides certain neuroprotective properties. Research suggests that caffeine may also be an effective alternative for headaches and as a general mood booster.
Caffeine + L-theanine benefits become amplified when combined as a stack. Studies have shown a variety of beneficial results, including:

As an adjunct to another Nootropic, or even alone, the results are unlike the stimulant caffeine alone: this provides a sense of focus, taking away the feeling of the jitters sometimes caused by coffee alone.
As a repeat client, I recommend :) ~E~ on 16th Feb 2018
This is a great morning starter combo. I have been taking it for awhile now every morning, and I feel a lot better than if I just drink a cup of coffee. Matthew Seals on 12th Feb 2018
Over the past few years, I've found it harder and harder to focus in the mornings. I've never been a morning person, and worse, I don't drink coffee. A friend who also takes these capsules offered to let me try one, and the difference in my ability to focus was immediately obvious. I started ordering my own capsules about eight months ago.
I definitely recommend these for people who are trying to achieve greater focus without jittery side effects (and want to save money on buying coffees!) Christie on 18th Jan 2018
Kicks in pretty quick with no after effects. Very good to start your day. Help relax and boost happiness as well. Highly recommended. John on 21st Dec 2017
These things work fantastically. I cope with ADD and find these to provide the focus I need without the nasty side effects of the stimulants my doctor has prescribed me. Couldn't rate something better - like the best parts of an energy drink without the shakiness and cardiovascular issues.
Great job again Nootropics Depot! Stephen on 27th Nov 2017
I’ve been taking Nootropics for over 8 months now, love neuroscience as it is, and I definitely can tell the gems apart. I think this product is a good product to use daily. Nootropics do change how life is viewed for sure, but I’m at the point where I know my neurons fire faster than everyone in my area. I even wish I could be hired as one of your own employees just to be around people who share the same things in common, that’s how much I believe in the power of Nootropics. Thanks Unknown on 23rd Nov 2017
This is definitely more effective than just sipping a cup of coffee in the morning, and more convenient too! Unknown on 14th Nov 2017
I can feel all other brands of caffeine + l-thenine, but can't feel this.
ND Admin: Perhaps the other brands you are using are putting more caffeine in the capsules than stated. Ahil Fidai on 3rd Nov 2017
Good combo, very convenient mode of delivery. If your tolerance to caffeine is high (or if you are particularly sensitive to l-theanine), you could consider taking one with a cup of coffee. I seem to have both a high tolerance to caffeine and sensitivity to l-theanine, and it gives a nice clean burst of focus for 4-5 hours. Turd Ferguson on 2nd Nov 2017
It just helps you get started in the morning, and is a basic to-have nootropic. The addition of L-theanine presumably prevents anxiety from the caffeine, but I never had anxiety from caffeine so I can't talk for its effectiveness. It just works. Unknown on 31st Oct 2017
