Ashwagandha, which is scientifically known as Withania somnifera, is a plant that belongs to the nightshade family. It appears as a short perennial herb with bright, orange-red fruit and green, bell-shaped flowers.
The herb, particularly its roots, is one of the foundational components in Ayurvedic medicine and has been used for centuries as a natural remedy and cure-all for a variety of conditions and disorders, much like ginseng. In traditional medicine, ashwagandha was used to help recover from illnesses and improve vitality, virility, and immunities. It was also used as an alternative for muscle aches, tumors, and even certain forms of cancer.
While ashwagandha appears in various formulations and extracts, KSM-66 is unique as the highest concentration full-spectrum extract. Full spectrum refers to an extract that contains a balance of components from the original herb instead of over-representing any single component.
The exact mechanisms of action have yet to be determined, though it is understood that ashwagandha is an adaptogen. Adaptogens refer to natural compounds designed to help you adapt to stress and maintain homeostasis to prevent negative physiological effects caused by stress.
Much of the herb’s effects come from a blend of its active constituents, which mainly comprise alkaloids like somniferine, tropine, and withanine, along with steroidal lactones known as withanolides. More than 140 withanolides have been identified and isolated in ashwagandha.
KSM-66 ashwagandha extract benefits are wide ranging. As an adaptogen, ashwagandha creates a sense of relaxation, increasing its potential use as a supplement for stress relief. Ashwagandha achieves this by reducing the immunosuppressive effects caused by stress and the concentrations of cortisol (the main stress hormone, in your body). This may also be beneficial to those suffering from depression or anxiety. It blocks harmful stress responses and induces calming effects, many of which are similar to GABA (gamma aminobutyric acid). It can also potentially help ease those suffering from ADHD or other hyperactive disorders. Even to those with relatively healthy minds, ashwagandha has shown a generally soothing effect.
As a nootropic, ashwagandha has been shown to increase mental focus. Early studies also suggest that the herb can help to improve memory formation and may potentially be used as an alternative for Alzheimer’s disease, though these findings require more studies and evidence.
Ashwagandha has also been shown to possess powerful antioxidant properties and neuroprotective abilities. Antioxidants neutralize free radicals, compounds created during the process of cellular oxidation. Free radicals can damage cells in your brain and body, leading to age-related degenerative problems. Antioxidants prevent this damage, potentially resulting in greater longevity.
Although ashwagandha cannot specifically treat cancer, it is often recommended for cancer patients. Studies suggest that its soothing properties can ease the pain caused by chemotherapy and other treatments by reducing fatigue and stress. Ashwagandha may also prevent immunosuppression.
Ashwagandha has also shown high potential for improving physical health. Research shows that the herb features powerful anti-inflammatory properties, which may be helpful to those suffering long-term joint or muscle pain. It has also been shown to lower blood pressure and reduce LDL (low-density lipoprotein) cholesterol.
Early studies suggest that ashwagandha may be an effective alternative for arthritis, diabetes, cerebellar ataxia, and certain liver conditions. Other studies have found that the herb may be used to reduce symptoms of Parkinson’s disease.

This is one supplement I keep coming back to. The dosage seems spot on, and its good for stress, depression, and anxiety. It sometimes gives me slight apathy and very minor brain fog though. Kyle W on 22nd Jun 2016

I mainly got this "KSM-66" Ashwagandha extract to help with mainly stress/anxiety/sleep. They seem to work pretty good for a herbal supplement. I still got a lot left so I am still in the process of 'testing' them out. BUT I do think they were worth buying as I have always wanted to try Ashwagandha and the KSM-66 brand/extract seemed to be the best and most potent of the Ashwaganda after researching before buying... All in all they work pretty good for stress/anxiety but don't expect a miracle cure, its just a nice thing to have when feeling stressed out or anxious. Dr. J on 22nd May 2016
This works so much better than the other ashwagandhas I have tried, it's not even fair. I don't get tired or depressed like I do with other ones. This makes me stress free, but leaves me awake and happy. It is basically how I expected regular ashwagandha to work after reading about it, but actually does it. Trevor Faust on 21st May 2016
I love this stuff. At first I put off buying it thinking it was another B.S. herb. Boy was I wrong it doesn't only help my anxiety it melts it all away. The weird thing it doesn't make me tired but instead gives me motivation and confidence. I will be buying again. Thank you N.D. for all your hard work. Josh Seal on 19th Apr 2016
