L-theanine is considered a non-dietary amino acid, but it can still provide a wide range of potential benefits when supplemented. Read ahead to learn more about this nootropic and how you may use it to enhance cognition.
L-Theanine Powder is a nootropic compound that is derived from Camellia sinensis--the tea plant. Black, green, and white teas all come from the Camellia sinensis plant and also provide the compound. L-Theanine is an amino acid, but it isn’t an essential amino acid or one of the more common nonessential amino acids that you might be more familiar with.
Although tea has been consumed for centuries and touted for its benefits for just as long, it was only in 1949 that L-Theanine was discovered as a constituent in green tea. L-Theanine has been used in various food and drink items in Japan since the 1960s. Perhaps surprisingly, L-Theanine can provide an umami (savory) flavor.
L-Theanine is structurally similar to Glutamine. It produces the neurotransmitters GABA and glutamate, which work within the brain following oral consumption and provides feelings of relaxation.
L-Theanine uses center around promoting relaxation. L-Theanine is a naturally derived nootropic compound that is given GRAS status by the United States FDA, meaning that the compound is generally recognized as safe. Adverse side effects are a rare occurrence.
Studies and anecdotal evidence show a significant increase in relaxation without a sedative effect with L-Theanine. Studies also show L-Theanine can promote a state of calmness and mental clarity. One study suggests that quality of sleep can also improve for people that experience hyperactivity during sleep. L-Theanine may also offer cardiovascular and cognitive benefits.
L-theanine has been shown to potentiate GABA, or gamma-aminobutyric acid, a naturally occurring amino acid. Studies show that GABA and L-theanine may work in harmony to provide deep relaxation, calm, and peace without invoking heaviness or inactivity. This combination may also result in general feelings of optimism and well-being. When taken in conjunction with caffeine, L-theanine has been shown to potentially mitigate shakiness, restlessness, and other negative effects of caffeine.
L-theanine may also encourage the release of several other neurotransmitters, including serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine. These neurotransmitters can have a wide range of effects on cognitive processes, tapping into feelings of reward, pleasure, and motivation. Theanine may also promote healthier sleep cycles.
Furthermore, L-theanine may increase your brain’s alpha waves, resulting in increased mental alertness and improved focus and clarity. This may lead to greater productivity aimed at reducing stress and increasing motivation. Some studies have even found that increasing alpha brain waves may encourage creative thinking.
Studies show L-theanine’s potential as an antioxidant. Antioxidants neutralize free radicals, compounds created during the natural oxidation of cells. Free radicals have the potential to damage cells and mutate DNA, contributing to the development of various diseases and disorders.
L-theanine may promote the production of nitric oxide, a compound that is primarily associated with widening blood vessels. Increased nitric oxide is often associated with improving cardiovascular health.
L-theanine’s potential as an anti-stress supplement may also contribute to improved brain health. Stress is known to cause damage to cells. L-theanine may prevent over-stimulation of neurons to prevent damage to them while protecting them from low levels of oxygen. Studies also show that L-theanine may potentiate the release of proteins necessary to nerve growth.

Okay, so why do I think so highly of L-Theanine? As someone who has a touch of Asperger's, and who happens to get hit with depression, it's a win-win for me because of this stuff. I'm very skeptical of claims made for nutritional adjuncts, and I first tried it about 10 years ago. While I was taking it I didn't notice any particular changes, but when I ran out, what became very noticeable were increases in my "disconnects" and depressive times. I worked my way through them, then thought, "Maybe it was the theanine." Took it for a month straight, then stopped cold. Sure enough. I felt as if I were returning to my status quo view of the world. Eventually, by working this way with it, I was able to get through a lot of the things which held me back.
L-Theanine is NOT a miracle cure for Aspbergers or depression. I should add that I'm not a medical professional. What I've written can be boiled down to, "It's good for ya!" And Nootropics Depot is my vendor of choice. Roy on 15th Oct 2016
Very fast shipping times, good prices, and the product is top notch. I'll definitely order more when I run out. I highly recommend these guys! Caleb on 21st Sep 2016

Sharper than ever at 75 years old -- L-THEANINE & PIRACETYAM Unknown on 20th Aug 2016
L theanine is one of my favorite supplements. Whether it be to mix with caffeine in the AM or to relax at night, it always produces the effect I desire. I've ordered two tubs from Nootropics Depot and have nothing but great things to say. I'd recommend spending 50$ because the free shipping is like next day. I do live in Northern Arizona, but still they get to the point of processing the transactions!

Been taking this for quite some time now. Actually on and off for over several years. I bought the powder product from this company to get a larger dose without it costing me a lot. Information out there says 200 mg maximum dose. It also says if you go higher than that you won't get much benefit. But I disagree. Maybe everybody's different but I usually get a better feel of it at around 270 to 300 mg. Most the time I mix it with other herbs for a synergistic effect. By itself it works but nothing astounding yet noticeable. If you're prone to high anxiety and used to taking prescription type medications for it then don't expect anything remarkably similar to that. If you want to drop the prescription meds and go natural route for mild to light anxiety then it's not bad. It also has other health benefits then just reducing anxiety which is the other reasons that I take it. I would definitely recommend having it in your toolkit supplements. Nate on 3rd May 2016
Quick delivery, great branding, and a good price, a 5/5.
I do wish they'd provided some rough measuring spoon....I have a scale I usually use but it'd be nice to have a spoon for rough and quick measurements if necessary, especially for a product with such a lage margin of safety like l-theanine..

Have used theanine off & on for over a decade now. Literature says it promotes alpha waves. I do feel a slight calming effect usually upon taking it or nothing.
As with most anything I take, I wonder if there's a fallof in effect w regular use. As w me adverse effects are nill, I have been upping both the dose & frequency of use recently. I don't take it by itself, usually mix it into smoothies or candy. I think it works well w chocolate, if you're into the whole kichen alchemy thing. Bob on 24th Nov 2014
