L-theanine is considered a non-dietary amino acid, but it can still provide a wide range of potential benefits when supplemented. Read ahead to learn more about this nootropic and how you may use it to enhance cognition.
L-Theanine Powder is a nootropic compound that is derived from Camellia sinensis--the tea plant. Black, green, and white teas all come from the Camellia sinensis plant and also provide the compound. L-Theanine is an amino acid, but it isn’t an essential amino acid or one of the more common nonessential amino acids that you might be more familiar with.
Although tea has been consumed for centuries and touted for its benefits for just as long, it was only in 1949 that L-Theanine was discovered as a constituent in green tea. L-Theanine has been used in various food and drink items in Japan since the 1960s. Perhaps surprisingly, L-Theanine can provide an umami (savory) flavor.
L-Theanine is structurally similar to Glutamine. It produces the neurotransmitters GABA and glutamate, which work within the brain following oral consumption and provides feelings of relaxation.
L-Theanine uses center around promoting relaxation. L-Theanine is a naturally derived nootropic compound that is given GRAS status by the United States FDA, meaning that the compound is generally recognized as safe. Adverse side effects are a rare occurrence.
Studies and anecdotal evidence show a significant increase in relaxation without a sedative effect with L-Theanine. Studies also show L-Theanine can promote a state of calmness and mental clarity. One study suggests that quality of sleep can also improve for people that experience hyperactivity during sleep. L-Theanine may also offer cardiovascular and cognitive benefits.
L-theanine has been shown to potentiate GABA, or gamma-aminobutyric acid, a naturally occurring amino acid. Studies show that GABA and L-theanine may work in harmony to provide deep relaxation, calm, and peace without invoking heaviness or inactivity. This combination may also result in general feelings of optimism and well-being. When taken in conjunction with caffeine, L-theanine has been shown to potentially mitigate shakiness, restlessness, and other negative effects of caffeine.
L-theanine may also encourage the release of several other neurotransmitters, including serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine. These neurotransmitters can have a wide range of effects on cognitive processes, tapping into feelings of reward, pleasure, and motivation. Theanine may also promote healthier sleep cycles.
Furthermore, L-theanine may increase your brain’s alpha waves, resulting in increased mental alertness and improved focus and clarity. This may lead to greater productivity aimed at reducing stress and increasing motivation. Some studies have even found that increasing alpha brain waves may encourage creative thinking.
Studies show L-theanine’s potential as an antioxidant. Antioxidants neutralize free radicals, compounds created during the natural oxidation of cells. Free radicals have the potential to damage cells and mutate DNA, contributing to the development of various diseases and disorders.
L-theanine may promote the production of nitric oxide, a compound that is primarily associated with widening blood vessels. Increased nitric oxide is often associated with improving cardiovascular health.
L-theanine’s potential as an anti-stress supplement may also contribute to improved brain health. Stress is known to cause damage to cells. L-theanine may prevent over-stimulation of neurons to prevent damage to them while protecting them from low levels of oxygen. Studies also show that L-theanine may potentiate the release of proteins necessary to nerve growth.
As a dietary supplement, take 100mg of L-Theanine 1-2 times daily.

It's kinda put ur mind on an alpha wave state which is nice for learning and relaxation
Still, it's not strong enough for me Unknown on 13th Dec 2017
As noted in the literature (L-Theanine: properties, synthesis and isolation from green tea - Voung et al - SciFoodAgri 2011; 91:1931-1939), L-Theanine's properties make it an ideal element with which to experiment in combinatorial, synergistic ways. We use Nootropic Depot's L-Theanine for our work because of its high assay for purity. We are at presnt conducting small trials of combining Nootropics Depot's L-Theanine with various other materials, including oxiracetam (available here), phenibut (ditto), kavalectone extracts, high-cacao chocolate (high PEA content), bitter orange extract, and THC-9. Great quality and use it religiously with my coffee. It taste like the Theanine I've purchased from other brands & has the same slightly clumpy consistency. Again, wish it came with a measured scooper but I have plenty on hand. DudeWhoBuys on 29th Nov 2017
Good quality and arrived quickly. No complaints Unknown on 26th Aug 2017
First Theanine purchase since my last batch from PowderCity got used up. Seems to work just as well if not better, and the price is fair. Unknown on 22nd Jun 2017
I find that 200 mg of this with 100 mg of caffeine is way better than any energy drink I've ever had, but Without the jittery buzz. bad night sleep this will have me feeling great and work ready for 4-6 hours, with caffeine of course. Jon on 27th Apr 2017
The l-theanine from Nootropics Depot has been great! It tastes quite okay, and I'm able to put it in my coffee. It really takes the edge off the jittery feeling caused by coffee. Highly recommended! Zach on 24th Apr 2017
Does what it's supposed to. Excellent quality l-theanine, nice packaging, great customer support. Highly recommended! David on 24th Oct 2016
Okay, so why do I think so highly of L-Theanine? As someone who has a touch of Asperger's, and who happens to get hit with depression, it's a win-win for me because of this stuff. I'm very skeptical of claims made for nutritional adjuncts, and I first tried it about 10 years ago. While I was taking it I didn't notice any particular changes, but when I ran out, what became very noticeable were increases in my "disconnects" and depressive times. I worked my way through them, then thought, "Maybe it was the theanine." Took it for a month straight, then stopped cold. Sure enough. I felt as if I were returning to my status quo view of the world. Eventually, by working this way with it, I was able to get through a lot of the things which held me back.
L-Theanine is NOT a miracle cure for Aspbergers or depression. I should add that I'm not a medical professional. What I've written can be boiled down to, "It's good for ya!" And Nootropics Depot is my vendor of choice. Roy on 15th Oct 2016
Very fast shipping times, good prices, and the product is top notch. I'll definitely order more when I run out. I highly recommend these guys! Caleb on 21st Sep 2016
