Polygala tenuifolia, commonly referred to as Yuan Zhi, Chinese senega and thinleaf milkwort, is a root that is commonly used in traditional Chinese medicine, where it is known as yuan zhi. In its traditional use, Polygala tenuifolia reportedly had protective effects on the brain. Current studies suggest that Polygala tenuifolia may act as a powerful nootropic.
Research on rodent subjects suggest that Polygala tenuifolia’s main mechanism of action and effect involve interactions with NMDA (N-methyl-D-aspartic acid) and NMDA receptors. NMDA is an amino acid derivative that is similar in function to glutamate. While small amounts of NMDA may be normal or may even prove beneficial, it is generally categorized as an excitotoxin, meaning it can cause over-excitation of nerve cells by flooding receptors, potentially resulting in cell damage and death.
NMDA may also increase the release of glutamate, an amino acid and neurotransmitter that is involved in nearly all forms of normal brain functions. Glutamate acts as mediator of excitatory signals in the brain, but a flood of glutamate or a sensitivity to the neurotransmitter can cause cells to become overexcited, leading to glutamate-induced excitotoxicity.
Sometimes referred to as Thinleaf Milkwort, Yuan Zhi, or Chinese Senega, Polygala tenuifolia is a root used in traditional Chinese medicine. Early animal research suggests that it may have mood boosting properties and promote brain health. Additional animal research has suggested that Polygala tenuifolia may also have adaptogen-like properties and therefore increases nerve growth factor (NGF) and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). Additionally, it may improve spatial organization/recognition and increase cognitive ability.

It was too stimulating even in small doses. I think I just react badly to cholinergic nootropic and Polygala is an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor. I don't like also adrenaline rush. But that's just my reaction.
Great quality and fast shipping! Unknown on 26th Oct 2018
I have ordered numerous types of supplements, and I have to say they are all a great quality. Some work great for me, while others I have not been too thorough in taking to write reviews. I just got my order today for this 20:1 Polygala tenuifolia. I am very excited to try this and I will let you my reviews on it. Also, I have to just say your Admins have the most hilarious comments to the trolls who right reviews. I also think it shows the confidence you have in the quality of products that you sell. The shipping is always fast and easy too! Thank you guys!
P.S. #5 review is just suffering from the nocebo effect(of all the products apparently) HAHA. Tiffany Gerhart on 17th Oct 2018
I cannot believe how effective this is for a natural extract. It is probably the most effective natural product I have ever taken for mood. When I take 3 capsules a day it is like a fog has been lifted and I can feel "normal" again. It also gets more effective as you take it. After a couple weeks you start to wonder if this is how people without mood difficulties feel all the time. This is going to be a staple of my regimen forever. CG on 28th Jul 2018
Both myself and my gf take this daily and we both receive noticeable benefits from dosing consistently. I take 2 capsules in the morning and maybe another in the afternoon. The benefits we both notice is the negative chatter in our heads are gone, I have increase verbal fluency, and it helps with bring you out of a "funk". J. Brown on 27th May 2018
I perceived no benefits or appreciable mood/perception changes after 5 days of repeated daily dosing. To be fair, my experience has not been great with higher potency extracts in general. I have had better experiences overall with higher doses of 5:1 extracts (even mega doses of raw herbs) than low doses of more concentrated extracts like 20:1. I get the feeling like important cofactors are lost in the process. Wanting on 1st Apr 2018
This is the only non mushroom nootropic I am currently taking. Love the fact that this is a dual extract.
(Don't forget to always take 3 capsules a day for max benefit) Moohyun "Unji" Roh on 20th Mar 2018
No effect whatsoever after repeated use on daily basis. The other customers who wrote 5star reviews probably had a placebo effect.
ND Admin: You wrote this same review on TeaCrine as well. Perhaps you are experiencing the nocebo effect. We've had so many people email us about how great their effects were from polygala, it's very surprising. It's one of the most effective natural extracts we carry. I'm sorry you didn't get the effects you were looking for, but calling placebo on everything you don't react well to is not scientific. Unknown on 13th Jan 2018
I love this herb. It stabilizes my moods, It helps me focus, gives me smooth energy, and even better sleep at night. It's an all around boost, mentally and emotionally. It takes time to build up in the system. I did not feel a thing for the first three days, and then day 4, boom! I had to cut it to one capsule a day for a week or so. then I increased to two. After three weeks I was ready for the recommended three a day. I suggest they change the bottle directions to say one capsule one to three times a day. I'm surprised it isn't more well known. I feel like I have found a game changer. Scott Grace on 8th Jul 2017
...when used over a long period 3x/day. Also massively aids spacial awareness, too. srubek on 18th Jun 2017
