Why Should I Take Cycloastragenol?
If you are looking for one of the best small molecule telomerase activators around, then cycloastragenol is it!* Small molecule telomerase activators are incredibly unique, one because they can enhance telomere length thereby producing a longevity promoting effect, and two, because they are easy to take. Most telomerase activators are large unstable peptides, which need to be stored meticulously and taken through less than conventional methods. With a small molecule telomerase activator like cycloastragenol, none of these issues exist. It is highly stable, and easy to take at low doses!
Our cycloastragenol is extracted from Astragalus membranaceus, also known as Mongolian milkvetch. This may sound familiar if you have taken a look at our astragaloside IV product, which is also extracted from Astragalus membranaceus. In fact, astragaloside IV is the glycoside of cycloastragenol. This means that cycloastragenol is simply astragaloside IV minus the sugar groups. A portion of astragaloside IV will naturally become deglycosylated in the gut, to form cycloastragenol. This means that a large portion of astragaloside IV effects rely on cycloastragenol formation. By taking cycloastragenol itself, you bypass this deglycosylation process, thereby ensuring a higher proportion of cycloastragenol is absorbed, and more importantly, is absorbed faster!*
What is Cycloastragenol?
Cycloastragenol is a very unique triterpenoid found in Astragalus membranaceus, a plant that is part of one of the largest families of flowering plants, Fabaceae. This family of plants is also oftentimes referred to as the pea or legume family. While Astragalus membranaceus does not produce beans like other legume’s, it does produce beautiful clusters of pea shaped fragrant flowers! However, what we are most interested in, are the roots of Astragalus membranaceus which contain a plethora of bioactive compounds, one of which is cycloastragenol.
Cycloastragenol is very similar to another compound called astragaloside IV. In fact, the only thing that differentiates these two compounds are two sugar groups. Astragaloside IV contains two sugar groups, while cycloastragenol does not. This means that cycloastragenol is the aglycone of astragaloside IV. While this may seem like a minor difference between the two compounds, it does have major implications for bioavailability. The sugar groups on astragaloside IV are bulky, giving it a molecular weight of 785 g/mol. This is in clear violation of Lipinski’s rule of 5, which states that for ideal bioavailability, a compound should have a molecular weight of under 500 g/mol. Rip these two sugar groups off though, and we end up with cycloastragenol which has a molecular weight of just 490.70 g/mol, which is right under the limit stated by Lipinski’s rule of 5!
Luckily for astragaloside IV, the sugar group bonds appear to be easily removed by our stomach acid. Thus, when astragaloside IV is supplemented, cycloastragenol will be formed in the stomach. So, what then are the advantages of directly supplementing cycloastragenol? The process of deglycosylation in the stomach will take quite a while, and will likely never be 100% complete. This means that by supplementing with cycloastragenol, you are getting a higher concentration of absorbable cycloastragenol. Furthermore, because there is no time delay, directly supplementing with cycloastragenol could result in a faster increase in serum levels of cycloastragenol thereby potentially shortening the Tmax, while increasing the Cmax. Taken together, this should result in significantly elevated effects. In fact, anecdotally we have found the cycloastragenol to be distinctly more energizing during our beta-testing!*
Cycloastragenol Benefits & Uses
- Helps lengthen and preserve telomeres*
- Promotes neuroprotection*
- Enhances skin health*
The Telomere Champion
Telomeres play a major role in the healthy aging process even if many of us are unaware of their hard work. Telomeres act as protective caps located at the ends of chromosomes, preventing them from fraying and sticking to each other. When cells divide, telomeres naturally shorten, eventually becoming too short to protect the chromosome adequately, leading to a DNA damage response that prevents further division. When we are young, an enzyme called telomerase is highly active and adds telomeric DNA to compensate for this loss. However, as we age, telomerase activity declines, resulting in gradual telomere shortening.
This is where cycloastragenol comes into play. By activating telomerase, cycloastragenol can compensate for this gradual decline in telomerase activity as we age. Thus, by activating telomerase, cycloastragenol can maintain telomere length, thereby helping to prevent the accumulation of DNA damage and delay cellular aging. Normally this is a very hard trick to pull off, because most telomerase activators are very large and fragile peptides, which require careful storage and less than conventional administration methods. There are smaller peptides, such as the dipeptide L-Carnosine which works well, but it requires a high dose of 1,000 mg. Cycloastragenol on the other hand is a small molecule, with decent bioavailability and a low dose. This makes it one of the most ideal telomerase activators around!
Cycloastragenol Stacks
The Telomere Stack: Cycloastragenol + L-Carnosine Capsules
L-carnosine is a very important endogenous compound, which has been shown to slow telomere shortening. However, just like with telomerase activity, the levels of L-carnosine gradually start to decline with age. Thus, it makes a lot of sense to stack cycloastragenol and L-carnosine together, as you are then taking a two pronged approach to slowing age related telomere shortening!*
Advanced Longevity Stack: Cycloastragenol + OptiNAD+
One of our most popular longevity products is the highly optimized NAD+ booster, OptiNAD+. However, OptiNAD+ does not have an effect on telomeres. Thus, combining it with cycloastragenol should result in a highly synergistic longevity stack!*
The Skin Stack: Cycloastragenol + Infini-B Capsules
In addition to its telomere lengthening effects, cycloastragenol is also highly prized for its skin health promoting benefits. A lot of the B-vitamins in infini-B also have highly beneficial effects on skin health, especially considering that we kept biotin levels low in infini-B which can actually cause skin issues for some. Thus, the combination of cycloastragenol and infini-B leads to a gentle, yet highly efficacious stack for promoting skin health!*
Cycloastragenol Dosage
