What Is Ganoderma lucidum Red Reishi Mushroom?
Red Reishi Mushrooms or as they’re known by their scientific name, Ganoderma lucidum, have been used for over 2,000 years in traditional Chinese practices. Red Reishi Mushrooms were first used in traditional Chinese practices during the Han Dynasty (206 BC-220 AD). Research has found information written about Ganoderma Lucidum mushrooms in classical Chinese texts. Red Reishi mushrooms are sometimes referred to as Lingzhi mushrooms.
Red Reishi Mushrooms have a vibrant flat, red-varnished cap with a shape similar to a kidney or clamshell, featuring white or brown pores on the underside. These soft and corky mushrooms have a long history and unique appearance. Due to the wide range of red reishi health benefits, red reishi mushroom has been a staple in eastern practices for many years. Years of study has determined various red reishi benefits including respiratory, immune, and cardiovascular benefits.

Function and Constituents of Red Reishi Mushroom Extract
Red Reishi Mushroom uses span many areas of health. Studies have shown that Red Reishi benefits can be credited to several compounds. For one, the Ganoderma lucidum mushroom synthesizes ganoderic acids which share similar molecular structure to steroids. Other compounds include polysaccharides, notably beta-glucans, coumarin, mannitol, and alkaloids.
All these compounds have been found to provide various Red Reishi health benefits individually. Red Reishi Mushroom also contains fungal immunomodulatory proteins (FIPs), which help support the immune system by stimulating certain cells and components that facilitate the immune response.
What is 8:1 extract?
We offer both a 1:1 and 8:1 extract of Red Reishi mushroom powder. The 1:1 Red Reishi mushroom extract powder is mixed with hot water to break down the chitin. Chitin is what makes up the red reishi cell walls. Breaking down chitin makes the red reishi mushroom powder more bioavailable. Additionally, none of the starting material is discarded, making the Red reishi 1:1 extract a full spectrum red reishi mushroom extract powder that is high in beta glucans. Red reishi mushroom also contains triterpenoids which tend to carry more immune-modulating and cognitive promoting benefits. Triterpenoids are ethanol soluble while the beta glucans are not. Our red reishi 8:1 extract uses an ethanol extraction method to create a highly potent triterpenoid red reishi mushroom extract powder.
We start with a 16:1 red reishi extract which carries some of the highest triterpenoid levels possible. Yet, since beta glucans are not soluble in ethanol we see lower beta glucan levels with a 16:1 red reishi mushroom extract. To get the best of both worlds, we mixed the 16:1 red reishi mushroom extract powder with the 1:1 red reishi mushroom extract powder to add beta glucans back in, creating a red reishi 8:1 extract. The best part about the 8:1 red reishi mushroom extract is the high beta glucan levels AND high triterpenoid levels.
This means that the 8:1 red reishi extract is more likely to have more immune system and cognitive promoting benefits.* Anecdotal evidence suggests that the 8:1 red reishi extract has more calming effects whereas the calming effects in the 1:1 red reishi extract are less intense.* This makes the 8:1 extract the best option for those looking for a good balance of general red reishi health benefits and cognitive benefits.*
Beta-Glucan (β-Glucan) minimum content: 20%
