Agmatine sulfate is a biogenic compound derived from L-arginine, a common amino acid involved in the synthesis of proteins. When L-arginine undergoes decarboxylation, a process that results in the removal of a carboxylic acid, it becomes agmatine sulfate. This compound is stored in the neurons of the brain and released when those neurons are activated.
The process of creating and storing agmatine sulfate sets it apart from its amino acid counterpart. Agmatine sulfate is considered a neurotransmitter or neuromodulator. As a nootropic, agmatine sulfate offers a wide range of potential benefits to your brain health and general fitness.
Agmatine sulfate benefits may affect a wide range of systems and organs to potentially improve overall health. Agmatine sulfate’s interaction with NMDA receptors and nitric oxide have been shown to improve numerous aspects of cognitive health and performance, particularly in improving memory and learning abilities. Agmatine sulfate may also:
- Possess mood boosting properties
- Improve sleep quality
- Improve sense recognition
As a regulator of nitric oxide, agmatine sulfate may also:
- Dilate arteries
- Reduce inflammation
- Support the immune system
- Increase overall strength and endurance
- Support digestion and gastric motility
Agmatine sulfate has also been shown to potentially possess powerful antioxidant properties. Part of this may come from its ability to limit glutamate activity. Overactive glutamate can actually cause over-excitation of the brain, leading to a process called excitotoxicity. Excitotoxicity leads to the elimination of nerve cells as a result of over-activation of receptors. As a potential antioxidant, agmatine sulfate may neutralize free radicals, toxins, and other harmful compounds that may damage the brain and the body..
Research shows that agmatine sulfate may also act as a calcium channel blocker, or calcium antagonist, which help to relax and widen blood vessels. This may potentially provide cardiovascular support.
Agmatine sulfate may also improve the body’s insulin response, which has been found to increase muscle mass while creating leaner, harder muscle definition.
Agmatine sulfate’s main mechanism of action involves NMDA glutamate receptors. When activated, these receptors allow for a flow of positively charged ions through the cell membrane. NMDA is also the main neurotransmitter involved in regulating memory functions and synaptic plasticity. Synaptic plasticity describes the ability for signals between nerves to grow or weaken over time. The stronger these signals are, the more effectively the neurons can communicate.
Agmatine sulfate has also been shown to control levels of nitric oxide. Nitric oxide is a compound naturally produced in your body that plays a role in cell signaling and communication throughout your entire system.

I initially began supplementing with agmatine to reduce a tolerance to the alkaloids found in Mitragyna speciosa. For this particular use I have personally found it to be effective, though in this area it does leave something to be desired. However, I soon discovered that it came with other benefits as well. I typically exercise four to six times weekly, doing both caridovascular and strength training the same day, split equally, for an hour and a half to two hours per session. Nearly immediately after beginning my supplementation, I found that my endurance had increased noticeably in both facets of my training, and, better yet in my opinion, it seems to be reducing the amount of fat gain while encouraging muscle growth.
As far as its use as a nootropic, I am not sure that I can comment. I have noticed that my level of irritability has decreased since beginning supplementation, as well as an increase in both concentration and information retention, though I cannot directly attribute this to the agmatine. However, it is definitely possible that it has played a role.
Overall, this is a great compound and, of course, the quality provided by Nootropics Depot cannot be exceeded. I highly recommend. Mr. Lotus on 22nd Mar 2017
Very good supplement. Will certainly keep it a part of my workout stack. Terry on 28th Oct 2016
I've had good results using agmatine to keep tolerance to other compounds down. Will definitely keep it as a part of my stack. Unknown on 20th Oct 2016
I've had agmatine in my pre workout regiment for the past 6 months and it's an incredible compound which is naturally created from the amino acid arginine. It's helped me in the gym but also outside the gym. I've had a history of nerve issues and agmatine helps a lot with alleviating some of the pain. The price is fantastic as well. I live in Canada and it usually takes 10 days for the product to get here so it's fairly quick. Sean on 11th Oct 2016
The product has met my expectations and has been useful for my workouts and for potentiating my other supplements. Dakotah Lee on 5th Feb 2016
