First discovered as a constituent of green tea leaves (Camellia sinensis) in 1949, L-Theanine is an amino acid analogue of the proteinogenic amino acids L-glutamate and L-glutamine. L-Theanine is considered a nondietary amino acid, not unlike L-Ornithine or L-Citrulline. L-Theanine is primarily known for its ability to promote relaxation without causing sleep and is often paired with Caffeine. It is thought that L-Theanine helps balance the negative effects of Caffeine that some people experience. Together, L-theanine and Caffeine are considered one of the most commonly used and popular nootropic stack options that may promote faster reaction time, numeric working memory reaction time and improved sentence verification accuracy.

L-Theanine may have positive mood-boosting effects as scientists have discovered that it changes levels of amino acids affecting serotonin and other neurotransmitters in the brain. L-Theanine may also help suppress glucocorticoids. Glucocorticoids are stress hormones that can have a negative effect on mood, memory and learning. It is also reported to promote alpha wave production in the brain. One study conducted by Unilever was able to confirm that even small amounts of L-Theanine were able to promote alpha wave production as indicated on an EEG (Electroencephalography).

Previously, I used Suntheanine and this works just as well if not better. I usually take 1 capsule when I am drinking a lot of caffeinated beverages and then another one when I feel the effects fade. (Caffeine has a longer half-life than L-theanine).
Around Christmas I was not sleeping very well. I got a Mi Band 3 as a gift and it has a basic sleep tracker. It confirmed that I was not getting enough deep sleep. And no, I was not drinking caffeinated beverages close to bed. In fact I do not drink coffee, tea only few times a year, energy drinks more often but when I drink caffeinated sodas (few times a week at most) I tend to drink 30-50oz.
I was alarmed when I saw that my poor sleep was not getting better. I wondered if I had always had bad sleep and was only realizing it now because of the sleep tracker?
Amidst all this I remember reading how L-theanine can help with sleep. Why not, I thought?
Next morning I woke up feeling better. Placebo, I thought. Thank god for placebo! Later in the day I sync my wrist band to the Mi Fit app. My deep sleep was nearly doubled!
The charts show a lot of deep sleep during my first 4 hours of sleep.
I sometimes forget to take 1 before bed but my sleep is still decent.

This is an excellant product for relaxation and sleep. I even got one for a coworker and she is finally sleeping through the night for the first time in years. It helps me relax when I'm anxious. Sometimes I like to drink a soda, or a coffee, etc.
I enjoy these things, but even a single glass of Coke can be a productivity killer for me. I've been using these capsules as a mitigation tool and they work fantastically. Now I can have my caffeinated drinks knowing that if I turn into a hyperactive mess, I have something to bring me back to focus.
They're great on their own too if you can't relax but want to. To me, the feeling is close to what I feel after meditation. It's not as intense but it last much much longer. A prolonged sense of relaxation. Unknown on 17th May 2018

i first tried l-theanine in the hyped caffeine/theanine synergy and i liked its affect. i decided to give l-theanine a shot on its own without the caffeine and i was amazed by the results. it gave me a nice, calm, clean sort of feeling that wasn't causing me drowsiness/sleepiness in any sort.
i started taking 200mg daily in the morning with my coffee and felt the synergistic effect much better with my low-caffeine coffee than that with the 100mg caffeine, and eventually started taking another 200mg dose in the evening. sometimes i would take 3x to a total of 600mg in one day.
