Coenzyme Q10, often abbreviated to CoQ10, is a molecule similar to a vitamin and is found within the mitochondria of almost every cell in the body. It was discovered by Dr. Frederick L. Crane in 1957 in the cells of beef hearts. In humans, Coenzyme Q10 is most common in the heart, liver, and other organs with high energy requirements, but it can be found in certain foods, including beef, organ meats, peanuts, soy oil, mackerel, and sardines.
Alternately known as vitamin Q10 and ubiquinone, Coenzyme Q10 is an oil-soluble compound that is considered a pseudovitamin. This means that it is essential to health and survival but generally does not require supplementation.
When supplemented as a nootropic, Coenzyme Q10 may also offer a variety of potential benefits to your physical health and cognitive performance.*
Coenzyme Q10 offers a wide range of potential benefits. Research suggests that Coenzyme Q10 may provide oxidative support.
Coenzyme Q10 benefits may extend to your blood health as well. Some research has shown that coenzyme Q10 can protect your blood vessels and enhance your blood flow. This is partly caused by preservation of nitric oxide, a signaling molecule that relaxes the arteries. This may improve overall circulation and cardiovascular health.
Coenzyme Q10 may also present significant benefits to your cognition. Studies found that individuals with higher levels of CoQ10 showed greater mental sharpness, increased mental energy, and greater performance on a variety of mental tests. In contrast, those with lower levels of Coenzyme Q10 had greater difficulty concentrating, experienced brain fog, and were slower in their mental processing.
Some studies also show that Coenzyme Q10 may help to regulate physical fatigue, increase energy, improve exercise capacity, and expedite recovery from exercise.*
Coenzyme Q10 is an important component of the cells’ mitochondria. The mitochondria are considered the power plants in your cells, responsible for producing adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the energy-rich molecule that fuels essentially everything you do. ATP can be produced through the foods you eat and through oxygen in the process known as cellular respiration.
Coenzyme Q10 plays an important role in the creation of ATP, particularly in the electron transfer chain. Studies suggest that up to 95 percent of the energy generated in the human body from cellular respiration.
As a dietary supplement, take 200mg of CoQ10 once daily.
CoQ10 may have synergistic effects when paired with a Green Tea Extract.
