What is Sarcosine?

Sarcosine is also known as N-Methylglycine and Methylglycine. Sarcosine is synthesized from the glycine N-Methyltransferase (GMNT) enzyme which utilizes a methyl group from S-Adenosyl methionine and donates it to glycine. This process creates Sarcosine and S-adenosylhomocysteine.

Sarcosine shares properties with glycine and D-serine but its effects are weaker. However, sarcosine is more reliably absorbed by the body than D-serine so a smaller more practical dose of sarcosine would achieve the same effects compared to glycine or D-serine.* Sarcosine metabolism is achieved through pipecolic acid oxidase (PIPOX) or sarcosine dehydrogenase (SARDH) enzymes. PIPOX and SARDH convert sarcosine into glycine.

Sarcosine Interactions with Glycine

Sarcosine has binding capability to NMDA (N-Methyl-D-aspartate) receptors. Research has found that Sarcosine seems to promote feelings of well being and support cognition by enhancing NMDA receptor signaling via inhibiting one of the major glycine transporters.

Glycine transport inhibitors such as Sarcosine block the uptake of glycine, leaving more glycine present in the synapse. As a result, NMDA receptor signaling is notably enhanced. GlyT1 and GlyT2 are two of the main glycine transporters. Sarcosine targets the GlyT1 transporter which is the more prominent transporter expressed on glial cells. GlyT1 has been observed to be more involved with NMDA signaling than GlyT2. GlyT1 inhibitors such as Sarcosine have also been observed to have a positive effect on cognition but further research is needed to gain a firm conclusion.

While there is still research that needs to be done to determine all the beneficial effects of taking a sarcosine supplement, there are a few isolated human studies that had interesting findings. In one human study on Sarcosine, it was found that subjects self reported increased motivation and less irritable mood when supplementing with 1g-2g of sarcosine powder.

Sarcosine Dosage for Tabets

As a dietary supplement, take one 1000mg Sarcosine tablet 1-2 times daily. For milder effects, break tablet in half.

    Gave me weird anxiety, feelings of extreme gloom

    Took me a while to figure this out, but eventually I realized that these new, odd, feelings of anxiety/doom and gloom that would suddenly wash over me in the evenings, happened the day after I took a sarcosine pill. So, just be aware and keep track of your moods. My friend who recommended this to me did not have this experience, instead sarcosine gave her extreme energy and focus, and, yet another friend told me it allowed her to work for longer hours. Everyone is different!

    Not sure, not much

    I tried sarcosine because I have bipolar disorder. I was hoping for a mood lift and potential healing of nmda receptors. I can’t say I experienced much on 2g per day for several days. I might have even felt better once I ceased taking it. It seems to have positive effects for some people, but not for me unfortunately.

    I've tried this both on and off carnivore diet and my experiences were extremely different. I tend to be sensitive to supplements, off carnivore diet I really hardly noticed anything other than a few moments of disassociative feelings. But the next few days my memory and thought clarity just wasn't there. On carnivore it was basically pure anxiety for a few hours and then feeling slightly tired the next day.

    Helps with brain fog

    I decided to buy sarcosine after reading a study that says it helps with the negative effects of schizophrenia, and to that end it does. The most noticeable effect is the significant decrease in brain fog, but I also feel somewhat happier. Dosage: 1 tablet in morning and 1 in the evening.

    MILD Help to Anhedonia, but definite increase in libido while on this. Started after about ~1 week of using it.

    Sarcosine

    I'm a 33 year old male. Diabetes typ 1. Healthy in general. I made a lot of research before buying Sarcosine. This supplement seemed promising in many regards. So I gave it a try. I usually have very low expectations with supplements. But sarcosine turned out to be one of the best things I've tried in many years. But it took a couple of days before understood how it effected med. I'm a single father of two young kids. Two and five. My attention and mood was much better than usual. My energy also improved quite a lot. I've been feeling confident and stable since I started using sarcosine. I skipped the supplement for one day, and noticed that I lost my patience easier, and were more prone to succumb to the negative effects of a demanding life. This has definetly helped me a lot. I'm surprised it had such potent effects. I'll sum up my experience: Higher energy Higher focus More patience Generally happier Stable mood Less fatigue Much less anxiousness

    It worked for me

    I feel this has smoothened out a lot of friction in my mind and given me more control over my thoughts. I used to frequently overthink myself into headaches over the smallest things but that just hasn't happened since. Absolutely not a change I was expecting and something I was cautiously optimistic about, but it's been six months so wow! What an improvement to my quality of life. It has also reduced stress/tension and eased expressiveness in social settings, which was what I was hoping for.

    Great for anxiousness

    I originally tried this supplement to treat chronic anhedonia. I don't think it did much for that but it did help with my anxiousness quite a bit. I titrated up to 4g/day but found that too high (headaches), and now take 1g in the AM, and 1g in the PM. This keeps my stress about 40% lower than it was previously. I wish I could buy a bigger bottle!
