You probably think of Sesame as a delicious topping on Asian cuisines, but did you know that Sesame contains powerful bioactive compounds that may help promote fat loss and support cognitive function? Sesame is one of the first oil-rich seeds known to mankind and is widely used in culinary fields as well as in traditional practices for their health benefits. Although we typically see Sesame seeds used as a topping, Sesame is grown primarily to extract oil from its seeds. Sesame seeds are believed to have the most oil compared to soybeans, peanuts, and rapeseed. Interestingly, Sesame extract also seems to promote balanced levels of oxidation and inflammation.*
Sesamin is a molecule known as a lignan, and although it exists in many food sources it is named after Sesame seed oil, where it was first discovered. Sesame seeds carry more lignans than just Sesamin. Some of these lignans are Sesaminol, Sesamolin, and Sesamol. However, these compounds are generally grouped together and referred to as Sesamins. Sesamins are also the most well-known lignan compounds found in Sesame seeds. In fact, Sesamins in particular have been found to promote balanced inflammation levels and balanced oxidation levels.
In some studies, Sesamins appeared to regulate the function of an enzyme called delta-5-desaturase (Δ5-desaturase) which limits how fast the metabolism of fatty acid occurs. Regulating this enzyme tends to result in lower levels of arachidonic acid. These results were found to be active after oral ingestion. Another interesting property of Sesame extract is that it appears to regulate a process called Tocopherol-ω-hydroxylation. Tocopherol-ω-hydroxylation is the rate-determining step in metabolizing Vitamin E. Regulation of this enzyme may result in a notable relative promotion of Vitamin E in the body after oral consumption.
Animal studies also revealed that oral administration of a Sesamin supplement appeared to promote neuroprotection following consumption. In addition, Sesamins were found to promote balanced levels of inflammation and support overall cognitive function compared to the control group in these studies. Although Sesamins showed notable efficacy, further research is needed for a definitive conclusion.
