What is Apigenin?
Apigenin is a flavone found in many different plant species, with notable plants including chamomile and parsley, but it is also found in Baikal skullcap for example. In fact, our Baikal Skullcap extract actually contains 15% apigenin! Apigenin is well known for its sleep promoting effect and supportive effects for cognitive function, digestive function, balanced oxidation levels and cellular function. Keep on reading to find out more about this awesome supplement!
While Apigenin can also be found in many of the foods that we consume on a daily basis, such as celery and oranges, the levels that can be found in our diet don’t come anywhere near the levels we are able to achieve with 98% pure apigenin supplementation! So if you are looking to get the most out of apigenin, then keep on reading.

The Key to Sleep, Relaxation and Cognitive Function
Apigenin recently garnered a whole lot of attention when it was discussed it in some popular podcasts. Indeed, apigenin is a great compound that can be taken close to bedtime to help with sleep due to its GABAergic effects. It is likely then also not a surprise that one of the compounds within chamomile that contributes to the relaxation and sleep promoting effects, is apigenin. The sleep promoting effects of apigenin may however take a little while to fully develop, similar to how the memory promoting effects of Bacopa monnieri can take a few weeks. The reason this appears to be the case with apigenin, is because it upregulates a very important enzyme necessary for GABA synthesis, glutamate decarboxylase (GAD67). GAD67 catalyzes the reaction that turns glutamate into GABA. In fact, the majority of GABA is produced through this GAD67 mediated pathway, and thus it is no surprise that apigenin can help with sleep, as GABA is a major player when it comes to inducing sleep. However, it also makes sense that these effects may take a while to develop, since we are relying on enzyme upregulation which is often a very slow process, albeit a very rewarding process!
The GAD67 upregulating effects also extend to apigenins relaxation inducing effects. GABAergic effects also mediate the majority of the relaxing effects we all know and love, and since we are overtime upregulating one of the main GABA producing pathways, apigenin is a fantastic long term solution for promoting everyday relaxation.
The fascinating thing with Apigenin, is that while it has sleep and relaxation promoting effects, it also has some pronounced nootropic effects. One of the main pathways by which apigenin creates this effect, is by allosterically potentiating alpha 7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (α7 nAChR), which is a fascinating target for nootropic effects! In fact, we can go a step further and say that within the nootropic world, a safe, readily accessible and overall affordable α7 nAChR allosteric potentiator is a bit of a holy grail, and with that in mind, apigenin stands strong as a natural nootropic!
Now the effects of apigenin don’t just extend to our brains, in fact, apigenin has some wonderful effects on overall health! One very interesting effect that apigenin has, is that it blocks an enzyme called CD38. This enzyme breaks down NAD+, a very important compound for overall health. NAD+ production is actually one of the reasons why we supplement NMN too! By inhibiting CD38, NAD+ levels should be promoted and may stay elevated for much longer. This brings up an interesting stack idea too, supplementing apigenin and NMN together for enhancing NAD+ levels synergistically!
Studies have also shown that Apigenin helps to support the regulation of various bacteria in the gut microbiota. When Apigenin first enters the body, the first place it interacts with is the colon which makes it the focus of many studies of the digestive function benefits. A study found that while Apigenin does not promote the actual number of gut microbiota, it does help to promote the diversity of the gut microbiota to support digestive function! In addition to digestive function, Apigenin also supports cellular function, balanced oxidation levels and skin health! Another study even showed that Apigenin helps to mitigate oxidative stress caused by UV-B, which indicates that apigenin could be a fantastic compound for overall skin health. Clearly, this is not a supplement that you want to miss!
Apigenin Stacks
Sleep Stack: Apigenin + Magtein Magnesium L-Threonate Capsules + L-Theanine Capsules
A popular stack is combining apigenin, Magtein and L-Theanine together for sleep. We tried this stack out and liked it a lot, so give it a shot!*
Digestive Function Stack: Apigenin + EpiCor® Capsules
Both Apigenin and EpiCor® promote helpful bacteria in the gut to promote the overall function of the digestive system! That’s not all! This pair also promotes immune function!*
Balanced Oxidation Levels Stack: Apigenin + Reduced Glutathione Tablets
For balanced oxidation levels, the obvious addition to this stack is Reduced Glutathione! Apigenin and Reduced Glutathione work together to promote balanced oxidation levels while also supporting cognitive and cellular function!*
NAD+ Stack: Apigenin + Nicotinamide Mononucleotide Capsules
One of the main purposes of NMN supplementation is to enhance NAD+ levels in the body. Conveniently, apigenin helps slow down the breakdown of NAD+, by inhibiting an enzyme called CD38. When combining the NAD+ elevating effects of NMN with the NAD+ breakdown inhibition effects of apigenin, we can in theory produce a more pronounced effect on NAD+ levels than either in isolation! This is a big tip if you are interested in NAD+.*
Apigenin Dosage
As a dietary supplement, take one 200mg Apigenin capsule daily.
