What is Hesperidin?
Hesperidin is a major flavonoid commonly found in citrus fruits and some vegetables. Hesperidin was first isolated in 1828 from the inner white layer of citrus peels and is the food bound form of hesperitin, a bioflavonoid that mediates most benefits of hesperidin including cardiovascular and neuroprotective benefits. It’s important to note the difference between hesperitin and Hesperidin is that Hesperidin converts into hesperitin in the body. For a while, hesperitin was incorrectly labeled as Vitamin C as it is found in citrus products and particularly concentrated in orange peels. Hesperidin has become a popular subject of recent research as there are believed to be a wide range of Hesperidin benefits.

Versatility of Hesperidin
Although Hesperidin’s most well known benefits are supporting blood flow and balanced oxidation levels, some research indicates that there may be other Hesperidin benefits to take advantage of. Interestingly, both a clinical trial and an animal study found that metabolic function and hesperidin weight loss benefits were supported by Hesperidin in the experimental groups. Results found that Hesperidin interacted with AMPK and PPAR signaling, which are believed to support processes involved in weight loss.
Additional evidence even suggests Hesperidin helps support balanced inflammation levels and the overall immune system. A small human trial concluded that Hesperidin may carry some neuroprotective properties as subjects reportedly showed enhanced cognitive function. Some researchers believe this effect may be related to Hesperidin’s impact on inflammation levels. Further research is still out to determine these results with more certainty. While preliminary findings indicate that these benefits may be a byproduct of Hesperidin’s impact on inflammation, blood flow, and oxidative stress, the benefits in these categories were still notable.
