What is Ashwagandha?
Ashwagandha is a herb that belongs to the night shade family of plants. The nightshade family of plants is a very interesting one and includes a lot of vegetables that make up large parts of many diets. Notable nightshade members are potatoes, tomatoes, chili peppers, goji berries and even tobacco! Another name for the nightshade family is Solanaceae. This is where Ashwagandha gets its Latin name from; Withania somnifera. Ashwagandha is a short perennial shrub, with a large root system that develops small deep orange fruits. The fruits resemble a small cherry and the leaves look frosty due to the many tiny hairs that are on them. This one of the reasons why Ashwagandha is also referred to as ‘winter cherry’. Traditionally, the Ashwagandha root is used, however new research has found high concentrations of key components in the leaves too. Various manufacturers have taken notice of this. One of the most notable being Natreon who produce a specialized extract of Ashwagandha called Sensoril. Sensoril is made from the leaves of Ashwagandha, giving it a unique chemical composition, which produces noticeable calming effects.
WHAT IS FENUGREEK?
Fenugreek, also known as Trigonella foenum-graecum, is a spice with a very long history of use, even the ancient Romans were adding it to their wine! It’s a popular additive to lots of different foods too, most notably, curry. In fact, fenugreek has a pungent, curry-like smell. These days, fenugreek (luckily!) isn’t being added to our wines anymore, but has instead become a very popular botanical for enhancing exercise performance. This is due, in part, to its protodioscin content, a compound which is also found in another popular fitness supplement called Tribulus terrestis. Fenugreek is also a great source of a unique vitamin B3 analogue called trigonelline, a compound which is also found in one of humanity's favorite psychoactive beverages, coffee! Trigonelline has a wonderful mood boosting effect, especially in concert with the motivating and confidence boosting effects of protodioscin. This is why our fenugreek extract is standardized to 2.5% protodioscin, and 2.5% trigonelline.

WHAT CAN FENUGREEK DO FOR YOU?
Fenugreek has been used for centuries for its beneficial properties, with a wide range of effects. We decided to specifically hone in on its mood, motivation, confidence and fitness promoting properties, by standardizing for protodioscin and trigonelline. The bulk of the fitness and confidence effects are coming from the protodioscin content, while the bulk of the mood and motivation effects are coming from the trigonelline content.
The real start of the show here is trigonelline, which produces its mood, and motivation boosting properties through some very desirable mechanisms. First and foremost, in a study on different bioactives in coffee, it was found that trigonelline can enhance dopamine release, which is likely responsible for the bulk of the motivating effects of our fenugreek extract. Furthermore, it was recently discovered that trigonelline is an NMDA antagonist, which is a popular mechanism for mood enhancement. As the cherry on top, trigonelline can even help enhance brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), which can help support neuroplasticity. This collective effects profile leads to a wonderful uplifting, and above all, nootropic mood boosting effect!
