What is Lemon Balm Extract?

Lemon balm extract originates from the Melissa officinalis plant, or more commonly known as the balm mint plant. Melissa officinalis is related to the mint plant and grows in all parts of the globe. One of the first known lemon balm uses was in Hellenic Greece. It was used as a tonic and later used in Europe during the middle ages. During this period the tonic was made from the Lemon balm plant and used as an elixir that people would apply to flesh wounds or took for headaches and fevers. One of the more traditional lemon balm extract uses was to brew a tea for a calming sensation. Lemon balm extract provides a concentrated form of melissa officinalis, thus offering a wide range of potential lemon balm benefits.

Lemon Balm Extract Uses and Benefits

    • Supports healthy sleep*
    • Promotes relaxation*
    • Supports cognitive function*
    • Promotes healthy skin*

Lemon Balm Benefits for Mood*

Most lemon balm benefits are attributed to the way it interacts with gamma-aminobutyric acid, also known as GABA. GABA is a neurotransmitter that’s responsible for regulating excited neurons in the nervous system, it’s also known as the brain’s main response to stress. GABA opens up easy communication between the nerves and the brain in mentally or physically stressful conditions. Rather than using a GABA supplement, lemon balm extract regulates a compound that blocks GABA known as GABA transaminase.

However, there are more lemon balm extract uses beyond lemon balm benefits for stress. Research on lemon balm found that lemon balm extract may promote nerve and muscle relaxation. Eugenol is a compound that exists in lemon balm and has demonstrated potential to  relax muscle tissue. This may be why drinking lemon balm tea after a workout helps promote muscle relaxation.

Lemon Balm Benefits to Cognitive Health*

Historically, people have used lemon balm for sleep. Studies on lemon balm tea, lemon balm extract and lemon balm oil have yet to see firm conclusions of lemon balm benefits for sleep. Some research has pointed us to organic compounds within lemon balm extract known as terpenes that help promote the soothing feeling of lemon balm. These terpenes mixed with GABA’s potential to relax the brain before sleep are believed to be the keys to how lemon balm effects relaxation and sleep promotion. Studies also seem to suggest that lemon balm extract can potentially support concentration and focus as well as overall cognition. Some studies show these lemon balm cognitive benefits as a result of lemon balm’s interaction with acetylcholine receptors. Acetylcholine is a neurotransmitter that has a significant role in the brain, particularly in verbal reasoning, memory formation, and concentration.

Has nearly cured my sleep issues

I'm pleased with Lemon Balm. I haven't tried any of the other extracts but this has helped my sleep so much and I just feel better overall.

    The very best sleep aid

Posted by Chad on 3rd Jul 2020

I suffer from an issue where my mind races through pointless thoughts when I try and fall asleep. Despite that, I still get a full 8 hours of sleep each night, but rarely feel rested. Lemon Balm has completely solved both issues for me. I wake up feeling refreshed each morning, and have no trouble falling asleep.

A bit expensive, but the tablet form is convenient

Posted by Widget on 29th Apr 2020

I normally have a terrible time sleeping, and these seem to be able to bring my sleep latency down towards a half hour from usually an hour, though I do have to take two. Still preferable to 4 or more capsules with smaller amounts of weaker lemon balm you'd usually find from most other brands. And of course, as always, guaranteed to be good quality/high purity since it comes from ND.

    Excellent

Posted by Arjan on 30th Mar 2020

I take this (or lemon balm powder) before bed for more restful sleep. I also like combining it with some of the extracts from the Sleep Support capsules, especially shilajit.

    Lemon Balm 10:1 extract tablets

Posted by chand on 24th Jan 2020

These tables have allowed me to get a solid 6-7 hours of sleep each night over the past week since receiving them. Before that, I struggled to get more than 4-5 hours each night. I was alternating between 2 mg timed-release melatonin + a fraction of a dextromethorphan tablet and another OTC sleep formulation each nigh. Not ideal, as both left me with a residual effect each morning. 2 mg melatonin + 1 lemon balm tablet has no such residual effect, rather I'm rested & clear-headed. I have noticed slight stomach irritation in the morning, which is easily cured with a chewable antacid tablet or two. Very happy with this product!

    Amazing

Posted by Matthew on 17th Dec 2019

I love these tablets. I take one thirty minutes before bed and sleep like a baby. I like that they are scored so that I can break them in half. If I want to get a little calm during the day, but not get tired, I will take half a tablet and get great effects. I see this is part of their new sleep support stack too. I guess I will have to try that one next.
