What is L-Tyrosine?
L-Tyrosine is an amino acid that is used to produce noradrenaline and dopamine. It is one of the 22 amino acids used by cells to synthesize proteins. It is considered a nonessential amino acid, as the body can produce L-Tyrosine from dietary L-Phenylalanine by way of the phenylalanine hydroxylase enzyme. The body then can convert L-Tyrosine into L-DOPA, using the tyrosine hydroxylase enzyme. This is considered a rate-limiting step, as the body can up/downregulate the enzymes to control how much of a specific amino acid is created. Supplementing L-Tyrosine bypasses one of the body's rate-limiting enzymes, and results in larger increases in dopamine production at a faster rate.
What is N-Acetyl L-Tyrosine?
N-Acetyl L-Tyrosine (NALT) is a modified version of the amino acid. The N-terminal has been acetylated, which increases its solubility, and ability to pass membranes in the body. NALT is 20 times more water soluble than L-Tyrosine. Many people report improved mood and focus effects from NALT compared to L-Tyrosine. However, those effects have not been clinically proven yet.
