Let’s take a quick walkthrough of this exciting formulation, as we had quite a few tricks up our sleeve with this one. Firstly, it’s important to discuss the challenge of the gelatinization process that we employed for our gelatinized Black Maca powder. Raw maca contains fibers that can be irritating to the GI tract. That’s why traditionally, maca root is always cooked prior to consumption. This poses a challenge with powdered supplements, as it means the maca needs to be cooked prior to being transformed into a dry powder. To do this, maca is flash heated in a process known as gelatinization, which cooks these fibers, thereby preventing their irritating effects on the GI tract. Unfortunately, this gelatinization process produces an unwanted side effect that is hardly ever discussed. One of the primary groups of bioactives in maca, are the glucosinolates. However, these compounds are not very active on their own, and they serve a much more important purpose as precursors for a class of much more bioactive compounds called the isothiocyanates. In order to convert the glucosinolates to isothiocyanates, an enzyme called myrosinase needs to be present. This enzyme is naturally present in maca, however, it is not heat stable enough to survive the gelatinization process. We had a clever idea though, why not just add in a different myrosinase source? We’ve been doing a lot of research on myrosinase recently and have discovered that the myrosinase enzyme found in horse radish root, is significantly more effective for glucosinolate to isothiocyanate conversion than other myrosinase enzymes. With this in mind, we added horse radish to the formulation, and lo and behold, the effects improved! A quick pro-tip, we have discovered in the lab that if you mix a glucosinolate source and a myrosinase source in water, and let it sit for 10 minutes, then the conversion of glucosinolates to isothiocyanates is optimized. This is because the myrosinase enzyme is most efficient at neutral pH levels, and starts to drop in efficiency at lower pH levels, like those found in our stomach!
Last but not least, we absolutely love macamides, which meant that a maca stack in our opinion could not be complete without a serious dose of macamides, which is not often found in other maca products. This includes the gelatinized Black Maca powder featured in this product, and thus a little extra help was needed in the macamide department, and thus we enlisted the help of our trusty high macamide extract. The macamides act as FAAH inhibitors, and direct CB1 agonists, and thus have a wonderful endocannabinoid modulating effect. This endocannabinoid effect goes exceptionally well with the more stimulating effects of the glucosinolates/isothiocyanates, so it was a real treat being able to combine a glucosinolate source + myrosinase, with our high macamide extract!
