What is Hericium erinaceus?
Hericium erinaceus, also known as Lion’s Mane, is an edible mushroom that belongs to the tooth fungus group. Lion’s mane mushroom is native to Asia, North America, and Europe. Lion’s mane grows in clusters and has long spines that lend it nicknames like the pom pom mushroom, bearded tooth mushroom, satyr’s beard, bearded hedgehog mushroom, or bearded tooth fungus. In the wild, these mushrooms grow late in the summer and early fall on hardwood trees. The American Beech tree is known for being home to Lion’s mane mushroom clusters.
Hericium erinaceus has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine. A rat study conducted in 2005 showed some compounds in the mushroom, like threitol, D-arabinitol, and palmitic acid, may have oxidation regulating benefits. More recently and more relevant to human use, is a 2013 review of scientific studies, which asserted the medical benefits of the mushroom by saying "This mushroom is rich in some physiologically important components, especially β-glucan polysaccharides, which may support healthy cellular function, promote immunity and health, and display neuro-protective benefits."
Hericium erinaceus Benefits and Uses
- Supports cognitive function
- Promotes cardiovascular health
- Supports mitochondrial health
What is 8:1 Extract?
Hericium erinaceus carries a multitude of polysaccharides, such as Beta glucan, heteroglycans, heteroxylans, and several cyanthane derivative triterpenes referred to as hericenone and erinacine. The 8:1 lion's mane extract is created from a dual extract solvent method using both water and ethanol. Various compounds within lions mane are only soluble in ethanol. The hericenones that promote cognitive, cardiovascular, and mitochondrial health are only ethanol soluble. Lion’s mane mushroom research has found specific hericenones believed to be responsible for these benefits. These hericenones are known as 3-hydroxyhericenone F, Hericenone B, and Hericenones C, D & E. This extract is referred to as 8:1 because you need 8kg of raw lion's mane mushroom to produce a single kilo of lions mane 8:1 extract. The hericenone and erinacine compounds are considered to be responsible for the cognitive benefits of this species.
Nootropics Depot has partnered with Nammex to offer these certified Organic whole fruiting body extracts, with not only testing to verify the percentage of active beta glucans, but verification that starch content is low, and that there are no pesticide residues. One of the biggest controversies in the mushroom industry today is the use of mycelium on grain extracts. Mycelium is to a mushroom like what roots are to a tree. When grown properly, they will form whole fruiting bodies; which are called mushrooms. However, to save money, most US producers of mushroom extracts today grow the mycelium on a bed of grain, like rice. To speed up production, and to make the end product cheaper to produce, these manufacturers grind up the mycelium and grain together, before allowing them to form whole fruiting bodies. The issue with that is that mycelium is not a mushroom, just like the roots of a tree are not a tree. The beneficial compounds in these mushroom species are all studied with relation to their fruiting bodies. The FDA even states that mycelium is not allowed to be called "mushrooms." However, many of the biggest brands today thwart that FDA guideline, and put out a cheaply-made, mislabeled, and ultimately ineffective products. They hide this fact by standardizing to "polysaccharides" instead of "β-Glucans."Well guess what shows up as polysaccharides in the traditional testing? Carbohydrates! Yes, the very carbohydrates from the rice used to grow the mycelium is used as a measure of the active ingredient in these substandard extracts. When you are buying one of the major mushroom extracts on store shelves today, you are buying a bunch of ground up rice mixed in with mycelium! It's a scam! This is why we decided to partner with Nammex. We are selling only certified Organic whole fruiting body extracts, which have been tested for not only the active β-Glucans, but to ensure the starch content is low; to prove what you are getting is actual mushroom, not ground up rice. You will know right away how big of a difference it is.
