What is Hericium erinaceus?

Lion's Mane, also known as Hericium erinaceus (bearded tooth mushroom, satyr's beard, bearded hedgehog mushroom, pom pom mushroom, or bearded tooth fungus), is an edible mushroom belonging to the tooth fungus group. Native to North America, Europe and Asia it can be identified by its long spines (greater than 1 cm length), its appearance on hardwoods and its tendency to grow a single clump of dangling spines. In the wild, these mushrooms are common during late summer and fall on hardwoods, particularly American Beech.

Hericium erinaceus Benefits and Uses

Hericium erinaceus contains a number of polysaccharides, such as B-glucan, heteroglucans, heteroxylans, as several cyanthane derivative triterpenes known as hericenone and erinacine. These latter compounds, found in the fruiting body and mycelium respectively, are considered to be responsible for the neuro-regenerative effects of this species. Hericium erinaceus has long a history of use in traditional Chinese medicine. A 2005 rat study showed some compounds in the mushroom, like threitol, D-arabinitol, and palmitic acid, may have antioxidant effects. More recently and more relevant to human use, is a 2013 review of scientific studies, which asserted the medical benefits of the mushroom by saying "This mushroom is rich in some physiologically important components, especially β-glucan polysaccharides, which may support healthy cellular function, promote immunity and health, act as an antioxidant and display neuro-protective benefits."

Nootropics Depot has partnered with Nammex to offer these certified Organic whole fruiting body extracts, with not only testing to verify the percentage of active beta glucans, but verification that starch content is low, and that there are no pesticide residues. One of the biggest controversies in the mushroom industry today is the use of mycelium on grain extracts. Mycelium is to a mushroom like what roots are to a tree. When grown properly, they will form whole fruiting bodies; which are called mushrooms. However, to save money, most US producers of mushroom extracts today grow the mycelium on a bed of grain, like rice. To speed up production, and to make the end product cheaper to produce, these manufacturers grind up the mycelium and grain together, before allowing them to form whole fruiting bodies. The issue with that is that mycelium is not a mushroom, just like the roots of a tree are not a tree. The beneficial compounds in these mushroom species are all studied with relation to their fruiting bodies. The FDA even states that mycelium is not allowed to be called "mushrooms." However, many of the biggest brands today thwart that FDA guideline, and put out a cheaply-made, mislabeled, and ultimately inneffective products. They hide this fact by standardizing to "polysaccharides" instead of "β-Glucans." Well guess what shows up as polysaccharides in the traditional testing? Carbohydrates! Yes, the very carbohydrates from the rice used to grow the mycelium is used as a measure of the active ingredient in these substandard extracts. When you are buying one of the major mushroom extracts on store shelves today, you are buying a bunch of ground up rice mixed in with mycelium! It's a scam! This is why we decided to partner with Nammex. We are selling only certified Organic whole fruiting body extracts, which have been tested for not only the active β-Glucans, but to ensure the starch content is low; to prove what you are getting is actual mushroom, not ground up rice. You will know right away how big of a difference it is. You can even go to the store right now, and pick out one of the major mushroom brands. Mix the "mushroom" powder into some water, and ad a drop of iodine. It will quickly turn a dark purple/blue, indicating high amounts of starch. You'll immediately see how big of a scam it is, and just how many "trusted" brands are in on it!

    What am I doing wrong?

Insane clumping, no matter what I do. Doesnt mix with anything, 80% of the product is lost, stuck at the bottom. I will stick to capsules I guess?

ND Admin: That can happen when it is exposed to moisture, or in a very humid environment. Panax ginseng root is similar. They are very hygroscopic.

Wasn't expecting much, and got some great results.. Now I am back for more!

I am not quite sure what results I expected to see from taking Lion's Mane initially to be quite honest. I just know that I had a couple friends taking a Lion's Mane supplement and recommended it. Also, I had read some promising things about LM on various websites myself, so I gave it a try. I went for the 8:1 because I tend to have a high tolerance to stimulants, supplements, etc, and I think I made the right choice.

I don't think I notice much after taking it daily for the first week or so, but then after about 2 full weeks of taking LM regularly I had this 'Ah Ha' moment. I suddenly realized that my mind overall seemed clearer, sharper, and I was able to recall things better/faster than usual. I have continued taking LM regularly since that 'Ah Ha' moment, and my results remain the same. In fact, I am back to reorder!

I am going to switch to capsules for the reorder though. While the loose powder is doable, it doesn't taste great, and it also doesn't dissolve easily in water... so it becomes more of a process that I'd like to take it with the powder.

I am reviewing after only taking 500mg a day for 2 weeks. I see that the recommended dosage is 1000mg daily, I will readjust and report back if possible. So far I have noticed better absorbtion of information from class lectures. No effect on motivation at this dose. The first few days I was experiencing a tingling throughout my body. The last few days I have been hit hard with allergies; I suspect this supplement has brought on an underlying immune response Ive been supressing with OTC meds (swollen lymph nodes, fatigue). Going to take a break for a week before taking the recommended dose to see if the Lions Mane is indeed affecting these "allergies" /flare-up. I am also aware Lions Mane increases histamine because of its increase on NGF.

I often read about Lions Mane affecting sex drive. This extract has not had an impact on mine. I am female.

I bought 30gs powder. Capsuled myself. Took 2 days to ship. Product is good. Your milage may vary.

    Excellent Product!

I capsule the powder myself or mix it in with a smoothie or drink of some form. Works great to help keep my memory sharp and lift my mood. I'm interested in trying their other mushroom products as well.

WHAT ITS LIKE ONCE YOU RUN OUT

I love this stuff, it works!. Brain fog gone. Your brain just feels more way more accessible and put together. Im writing this review now that I've run out, I definitely noticed a relapse into mild brain fog. The 8:1 extract works fully at around 800mgs, more is not necessarily better, and this is my sweet spot (170lb M)

    THis actually a Question

Why is the 8:1 extract lower in beta-glugan than the 1:1. Is the 1:1 stronger and more effective?
if it is 8:1 extract means that is 8 times stronger?

ND Admin: The Megazyme beta glucan testing gives the results for 1,3 through 1,6 beta glucans. There are cellulose based 1,4 beta glucans that show up in the testing for the 1:1 extract. They have their own effects, but are not the primary beta glucans you are interested in for lion's mane. The 8:1 does not pull those 1,4 beta glucans over. So it concentrates the 1,3 and 1,6 beta glucans. You get less total beta glucans, but your are getting more of the really good ones. Also, this extract has 1% erinacene, which is the primary NGF/BDNF compound in lion's mane. The 8:1 extract is absolutely better in every way.

    Very simple, it works.

My biggest fear was not wanting to get ripped off so I did a lot of research. Lions Mane from Nootropics is the best quality hands down. I like the fact they hype it up but give the facts. My memory is better and I am clearer in my thoughts. I noticed an improvement after 2 to 3 weeks of use. Now I'm a repeat customer!

Wonderful addition to a daily stack

This product has some issue with clumping, that is why only 4 stars. More potent than other brands I’ve tried. I already placed my next order, got the 60grams this time!
