What is Hericium erinaceus?

Hericium erinaceus, also known as Lion’s Mane, is an edible mushroom that belongs to the tooth fungus group. Lion’s mane mushroom is native to Asia, North America, and Europe. Lion’s mane grows in clusters and has long spines that lend it nicknames like the pom pom mushroom, bearded tooth mushroom, satyr’s beard, bearded hedgehog mushroom, or bearded tooth fungus. In the wild, these mushrooms grow late in the summer and early fall on hardwood trees. The American Beech tree is known for being home to Lion’s mane mushroom clusters.

Hericium erinaceus has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine. A rat study conducted in 2005 showed some compounds in the mushroom, like threitol, D-arabinitol, and palmitic acid, may have oxidation regulating benefits. More recently and more relevant to human use, is a 2013 review of scientific studies, which asserted the medical benefits of the mushroom by saying "This mushroom is rich in some physiologically important components, especially β-glucan polysaccharides, which may support healthy cellular function, promote immunity and health, and display neuro-protective benefits."

Hericium erinaceus Benefits and Uses

    • May help support cognitive function

    • May help promote cardiovascular health

    • May help support mitochondrial health

What is 8:1 Extract?

Hericium erinaceus carries a multitude of polysaccharides, such as Beta glucan, heteroglycans, heteroxylans, and several cyanthane derivative triterpenes referred to as hericenone and erinacine. The 8:1 lion's mane extract is created from a dual extract solvent method using both water and ethanol. Various compounds within lions mane are only soluble in ethanol. The hericenones that promote cognitive, cardiovascular, and mitochondrial health are only ethanol soluble. Lion’s mane mushroom research has found specific hericenones believed to be responsible for these benefits. These hericenones are known as 3-hydroxyhericenone F, Hericenone B, and Hericenones C, D & E. This extract is referred to as 8:1 because you need 8kg of raw lion's mane mushroom to produce a single kilo of lions mane 8:1 extract. The hericenone and erinacine compounds are considered to be responsible for the cognitive benefits of this species.

Beta-Glugan (β-Glucan) minimum content: 15%

Lions Mane Mushroom Dosage

i would say 4.5 stars. next time i would buy this in pill form. i make a little morning beverage with cacao and honey but the mushroom doesn't mix in well. i've noticed some of the cognitive benefits, so that's great, but am also doing other things so who's to say. less brain fog and significantly better focus compared to usual. happy with my purchase.

One of My Absolute Favorite Supplements.

I was very skeptical of the concept of medicinal mushrooms but I thought that since I have tried just about every other Nootropic I might as well try to keep an open mind and give these a shot. I wasn't expecting much, and I got far more than I bargained for in this extract. I appreciate the clarity of cognition that this brought on almost immediately but what was most noticeable to me was the very profound sense of well being that just 500 mgs. of this brings on. I am also doing amino acid therapy in an attempt to heal after a last desperate battle with end stage chronic alcoholism, and yesterday when I took this along with 500 mgs. of L Phenylalinine and about 200 mgs. of Pakistani Shilajit resin I literally felt the best that I have in about 30 years. I met a friend last night who picked me up from the hospital when I was released at the beginning of March, 2019 and she remarked that she could not believe the change for the better that has come over me in the last two weeks in terms of appearance and demeanor. I am fully convinced that ND's Cordecyps, Reishi and Lion's Mane ethanol extracts played a significant part in my recovery. If they can help me, they can help anybody. I stocked up on about a 6 month supply.

I don't normally leave reviews, but this product deserves one. I've taken lion's mane before with great results, but the 8:1 extract brings it to a whole other level. I mix this in my morning coffee and an hour later I feel mentally on point. It has helped me communicate better, produce better results at work, and my retention for information has increased tremendously. I highly recommend this to anyone looking for these results. I stack this with the oxiracetam and alpha gpc and my productivity has gone through the roof.

    What am I doing wrong?

Insane clumping, no matter what I do. Doesnt mix with anything, 80% of the product is lost, stuck at the bottom. I will stick to capsules I guess?

ND Admin: That can happen when it is exposed to moisture, or in a very humid environment. Panax ginseng root is similar. They are very hygroscopic.

Wasn't expecting much, and got some great results.. Now I am back for more!

I am not quite sure what results I expected to see from taking Lion's Mane initially to be quite honest. I just know that I had a couple friends taking a Lion's Mane supplement and recommended it. Also, I had read some promising things about LM on various websites myself, so I gave it a try.

I don't think I notice much after taking it daily for the first week or so, but then after about 2 full weeks of taking LM regularly I had this 'Ah Ha' moment. I suddenly realized that my mind overall seemed clearer, sharper, and I was able to recall things better/faster than usual. I have continued taking LM regularly since that 'Ah Ha' moment, and my results remain the same. In fact, I am back to reorder!

I am going to switch to capsules for the reorder though. While the loose powder is doable, it doesn't taste great, and it also doesn't dissolve easily in water... so it becomes more of a process that I'd like to take it with the powder.

I am reviewing after only taking 500mg a day for 2 weeks. I see that the recommended dosage is 1000mg daily, I will readjust and report back if possible. So far I have noticed better absorbtion of information from class lectures. No effect on motivation at this dose. The first few days I was experiencing a tingling throughout my body. The last few days I have been hit hard with allergies; I suspect this supplement has brought on an underlying immune response Ive been supressing with OTC meds (swollen lymph nodes, fatigue). Going to take a break for a week before taking the recommended dose to see if the Lions Mane is indeed affecting these "allergies" /flare-up. I am also aware Lions Mane increases histamine because of its increase on NGF.

I often read about Lions Mane affecting sex drive. This extract has not had an impact on mine. I am female.

I bought 30gs powder. Capsuled myself. Took 2 days to ship. Product is good. Your milage may vary.

    Excellent Product!

I capsule the powder myself or mix it in with a smoothie or drink of some form. Works great to help keep my memory sharp and lift my mood. I'm interested in trying their other mushroom products as well.

WHAT ITS LIKE ONCE YOU RUN OUT

I love this stuff, it works!. Brain fog gone. Your brain just feels more way more accessible and put together. Im writing this review now that I've run out, I definitely noticed a relapse into mild brain fog. The 8:1 extract works fully at around 800mgs, more is not necessarily better, and this is my sweet spot (170lb M)

    THis actually a Question

Why is the 8:1 extract lower in beta-glugan than the 1:1. Is the 1:1 stronger and more effective?
if it is 8:1 extract means that is 8 times stronger?

ND Admin: The Megazyme beta glucan testing gives the results for 1,3 through 1,6 beta glucans. There are cellulose based 1,4 beta glucans that show up in the testing for the 1:1 extract. They have their own effects, but are not the primary beta glucans you are interested in for lion's mane. The 8:1 does not pull those 1,4 beta glucans over. So it concentrates the 1,3 and 1,6 beta glucans. You get less total beta glucans, but your are getting more of the really good ones. It also concentrates other compounds, like erinacines and hericenones. However, there are no qualified reference standards for those yet. Therefore, we are unable to properly quantify the exact numbers. We are working to improve the methods and reference standards to get these numbers validated, though.

    Very simple, it works.

My biggest fear was not wanting to get ripped off so I did a lot of research. Lions Mane from Nootropics is the best quality hands down. I like the fact they hype it up but give the facts. My memory is better and I am clearer in my thoughts. I noticed an improvement after 2 to 3 weeks of use. Now I'm a repeat customer!

Wonderful addition to a daily stack

This product has some issue with clumping, that is why only 4 stars. More potent than other brands I’ve tried. I already placed my next order, got the 60grams this time!
