What are Oleamide Capsules?
Oleamide, also known as Cerebrodiene, is an organic compound and the primary amide derived from oleic acid ODA (octadecanoamide). Oleic Acid is an omega-9 fatty acid from olive oil. Oleamide is colorless and has a waxy solid texture. Oleamide was first isolated from the spinal fluid of sleep-deprived cats. Sometimes Oleamide is classified as a fatty acid primary amide (FAPA) and occurs naturally in animals and accumulates in the cerebrospinal fluid when the body is experiencing sleep deprivation. The natural occurrence of Oleamide in human serum was first reported in 1989.
Oleamide Uses and Benefits
Studies have shown that Oleamide may have the following benefits:
- May help support healthy sleeping habits*
- May help promote cognitive function*
- May help support brain health*
History of Use for Oleamide
Oleamide is a natural metabolite of Oleic acid and has been used in traditional Chinese practices for sleep support. The first use of Oleamide in Traditional Chinese practices started with the Jujube fruit where its usage dates as far back as 2500 years. This later sparked research in which it was found that Oleamide naturally occurs in Jujube plants. Further research has shown that Oleamide appears to be synthesized in humans from ammonia and oleic acid.
Additionally, it has been determined that Oleamide is structurally similar to anandamide. Anecdotal reports suggest that their Oleamide experiences improved their sleep habits.
So far it’s seen that Oleamide has interactions with multiple neurotransmitter systems. Oleamide interacts with the brain’s GABA receptors which is helpful for promoting relaxation. It’s also been discovered that oleamide can bind to the CB1 receptor (cannabinoid 1 receptor). Some research suggests that Oleamide effects can promote healthy levels of neuroinflammation by acting on the CB2 (cannabinoid 2 receptor) in high concentrations. Thus suggesting that this compound has potential to promote cellular health and promote healthy stress levels.
Studies have shown serotoninergic effects of Oleamide. It makes the 5-HT2A serotonin receptors more sensitive without necessarily influencing the normal signaling process. It also seems to extend the enhanced sensitivity to 5-HT1A and 5-HT2C receptors with no effect on the 5-HT3 receptors and has no effect on serotonin binding to the 5-HT receptors.
Interestingly, Oleamide binds to the 5HT7 receptors and acts as an inhibitor on the 5-HT7 receptor. It acts as agonist on the receptor when no serotonin is present and produces serotonin like effects at a lower intensity.
There is continuous research being conducted to discover more about Oleamide’s influence and on sleep and other Oleamide effects.*
