Description

What is Reduced Glutathione?

Glutathione is a tripeptide present in every cell in the body and is the body’s primary agent for balancing oxidation levels. Glutathione exists in reduced and oxidized states abbreviated as GSH and GSSG respectively. Reduced Glutathione has been well researched for its ability to support balanced oxidation levels. So much so, that scientists look at the ratio of Oxidized Glutathione to Reduced Glutathione within cells as an indicator of oxidative stress. An increase in this ratio typically indicates greater oxidative stress. In fact, research shows that a lack of Glutathione contributes to oxidative stress, which is a major player in the aging process. In addition to helping support balanced oxidation levels, Glutathione plays a critical role in several cellular processes like supporting cognitive function and promoting immune system function.* Let’s take a deeper dive into the fascinating Reduced Glutathione benefits!*

Reduced Glutathione Benefits and Uses

    • May help support cognitive function*
    • May help promote balanced oxidation levels*
    • May help support skin health*
    • May help promote cellular function*
    • May help support immune system function*

Reduced Glutathione: The Answer to Oxidative Stress?

Many people supplement Glutathione for its benefits in balancing oxidation levels. Unfortunately, bodily demand for Glutathione sometimes overwhelms the body’s ability to produce it. This can be problematic as research has revealed that oxidative stress not only contributes to the aging process, but negatively impacts cognitive, cellular, and immune system function as well. Research on the negative impacts of oxidative stress has grown rapidly in the last decade and results seem to conclude that oxidative stress poses threats to cognitive and cellular function in particular. Studies have revealed that Glutathione levels rise in the body following Reduced Glutathione supplementation and as many researchers hypothesized, lesser levels of oxidative stress were associated with Reduced Glutathione supplementation. Thus, promoting cognitive function by helping support an optimal environment for cognitive processes.

Research has also found that Reduced Glutathione also supports cognitive function and appears to promote skin health and vitality. Scientists believe this is due to the inverse relationship between Reduced Glutathione supplementation and levels of oxidative stress. Although for years it was common knowledge that ‘stress makes you old’, it wasn’t until recently when modern science confirmed that not only can oxidative stress accelerate elements of the aging process but it may also exaggerate signs of aging reflected in our skin, such as wrinkles.

Reduced Glutathione Bioavailability

A question we often get is whether or not Reduced Glutathione is actually bioavailable. This is actually quite a hotly debated topic, so we thought we’d settle the score! While the bioavailability of Reduced Glutathione is not stellar, this should not be confused with it being entirely non-bioavailable. Many compounds actually display very low bioavailability, but we compensate for this by dosing the compounds higher in order to achieve the biological effects that we are after. This is exactly what is going on with Reduced Glutathione too, the bioavailability is not great so we compensate for this with a large dose of 500 mg. At this dosage level, studies have found marked elevation of Glutathione levels throughout the body. In one study, participants were either given 250 mg or 1,000 mg of Reduced Glutathione per day for a duration of 6 months. Glutathione levels went up significantly in erythrocytes, plasma, lymphocytes and buccal cells after 1 month of daily supplementation. After 6 months, the low dose group (250 mg/day) found an elevation in Glutathione levels of 17% in the blood and 29% in erythrocytes, whereas in the high dose group (1,000 mg/day) these changes were significantly higher at 30-35%  in erythrocytes, lymphocytes and plasma. Furthermore these changes in Glutathione levels persisted for a month after Reduced Glutathione supplementation was ceased, meaning that supplementing with Reduced Glutathione long term may help promote overall Glutathione stores which may produce long term benefits!*

Which Glutathione Is The Best For Me?

Now that we have a full line up of glutathione supplements, a comparison is in order! Starting with the simplest glutathione supplement, reduced Glutathione is a fantastic option if you have patience and are ok with higher doses. Reduced glutathione needs to be taken in the 500-1,000 mg range, and glutathione levels will not significantly increase right away. You need to take reduced glutathione for at least a couple of weeks, before your reduced glutathione levels are significantly increased. However, this also makes reduced glutathione a great option for those that are purely interested in keeping their glutathione reserves topped up long term.*

That brings us to S-Acetyl L-Glutathione which has significantly better bioavailability, and is amongst the very best glutathione supplements. The primary benefit here too, is that S-Acetyl L-Glutathione can acutely raise glutathione levels, which sets it apart from reduced glutathione. S-Acetyl L-Glutathione also does a great job of getting glutathione to where we need it most, and with the increased speed of raising glutathione levels, this makes S-Acetyl L-Glutathione a top choice if you need significant results quickly!*

Last but certainly not least, S-Phenylacetyl L-Glutathione! This form of glutathione is very similar to S-Acetyl L-Glutathione, only just slightly losing out on total absorption. However, due to the unique phenylacetyl group, we predict that S-Phenylacetyl L-Glutathione may have unexplored nootropic potential. So, if you are looking for a potentially nootropic glutathione supplement, then S-Phenylacetyl L-Glutathione is the one for you!*

    Works Wonders For Skin

I’ve always had terribly rough hands from working with fiberglass trays at the restaurant. I’m a server. My skin was so bad my wife would say I had alligator hands. It’s been that way since I’ve started working. After a month of taking 500mg a day, my skin has never been softer. Irritation is gone and my skin just shines. I wasn’t expecting this. I can guarantee that my skin has been improved since taking this supplement.

    Good stuff

I've been testing this for quite a while. It took me a while to figure it out since I would at first take it as part of a big stack of things. So I decided to take it solo on an empty stomach when I first wake up. Still didn't work. But 15 minutes or so later I felt it! It just made me think clearer and feel more energized. I own about 25 nootropics from ND, I can confidently say I'm one of the few who feels every one of them almost immediately upon taking them. This is the only one I own that I know I have to wait a bit for it to work and on an empty stomach. So be patient with this product.

    Reduced Glutathione

I just started taking 1 gram a day (1 month in). I find it gives a good clean focus that helps me not get distracted. I started taking with NAC and Magtein in hopes of curbing any impulsiveness. Its fairly subtle but works well. Zero side effects so far
