Why Should I Take Supercritical CO2 Myrrh Extract?

Our supercritical CO2 myrrh extract is a fantastic option for tackling pain head on and boosting mood at the same time. We carefully selected a very high quality extract of myrrh, created through cutting edge supercritical CO2 extraction methodologies. This yields very high levels of the primary bioactives in myrrh, the furanodienes. Standardized to a whopping 4% furanodienes, our myrrh extract is currently the only standardized myrrh extract on the market, and it’s a very potent one too.* If you have tried a myrrh extract before, this one is sure to blow you away!

One of the reasons our myrrh extract is so unique, is because of the furanodienes it is standardized to, which have a mild effect on central opioid receptors. This in turn provides a unique and robust pain management effect that is not seen in many other pain supplements. In addition to its opioid effects, myrrh also has powerful effects on inflammation. The combination of these two mechanisms make for a fantastic ally in pain management!*

What is Myrrh?

Myrrh is the aromatic resin that seeps out of the Commiphora myrrha tree. The Commiphora myrrha tree is a part of the Burseraceae family, of which Boswellia serrata (the resin of which yields frankincense) is also a part of! Myrrh has enjoyed an incredibly rich history of use, as a perfume, incense, additive in wine and as a traditional medicine.

Some of the earliest known uses of myrrh date back to the ancient Egyptians. Specifically, king Sahure, who organized the first expedition to “the land of Punt” which is now modern day Somalia. During these expeditions, large amounts of myrrh resin were brought back. Interestingly enough, myrrh was even used in conjunction with natron for the embalming of mummies! Myrrh is also featured in ancient Greek mythology, specifically in the legend of Myrrha and the birth of Adonis. It is even mentioned in religious books from various major organized religions. Long story short, myrrh has clearly been a prized commodity for centuries!

The myrrh tree is currently grown in India, East Africa and Saudi Arabia but is native to Somalia and Ethiopia. The main bioactives within the myrrh resin are a class of sesquiterpenes called the furanodienes. The furanodienes are commonly thought to be the source of myrrh’s distinct smell, and modern research has illustrated that they are also largely responsible for the unique pain management effects of myrrh! These sesquiterpenes appear to be somewhat heat unstable and thus, low temperature extraction methodologies, such as supercritical CO2 extraction must be utilized to obtain high furanodiene extracts. So that’s exactly what we did!

Our supercritical CO2 myrrh extract is standardized to 4% Furanodienes!

Supercritical CO2 Myrrh Extract Benefits & Uses

    • Support pain management*
    • Promotes balanced inflammation levels
    • Enhances mood*

Ancient Relief

One of myrrh’s main claims to fame are its incredible pain management effects! These effects can be traced back to the furanodienes. Specifically two furanodienes, furaneudesma-1,3-diene and curzerene, which interact with central opioid receptors in the brain. By activating these central opioid receptors, they can help dampen incoming nociceptive signals, which our brain interprets as pain. Additionally, the furanodienes also help dampen inflammation. Together with the central opioid effects, this produces a very comprehensive pain management effect. This effect extends to all areas of pain, and can even help promote joint comfort!

Anecdotally, we have found the pain management effects of our myrrh extract to be very fast acting and robust. It is quite a unique natural product for this reason, and certainly comes in handy when you need some quick relief. During beta-testing, we also discovered that our myrrh extract has mood boosting effects, which is likely being mediated through its central opioid effects.* The effects are mild, but provide a very pleasant warm mood lift!

Myrrh also possesses some unique antimicrobial properties. This is probably also part of the reason it was used during the embalming of mummies! This could have some beneficial effects in the urinary tract according to a study on myrrh extract. In a somewhat similar vein, myrrh also appears to offer gastroprotective effects and skin protective properties. Overall, our myrrh extract offers a fairly wide array of benefits!

A Topical Powerhouse

Since we offer our high quality supercritical CO2 extract in liquid form, it can also be used topically! The sesquiterpenes appear to absorb topically, and myrrh seems to have fairly pronounced topical pain management effects via sodium channel blocking. This makes it a very unique option for localized pain, especially in combination with some of our NextCBD as a topical!

The anti-microbial properties also come in handy with topical use, as it could help keep microbial load down on the skin around the site of injuries, blemishes, acne etc. Even more interesting, myrrh may even help speed up the healing of skin! Since it also has skin-protective effects, topical use of myrrh may also have positive effects on skin aesthetics.
