Uridine Monophosphate Powder

What is Uridine Monophosphate Powder?

Uridine Monophosphate, often abbreviated to UMP, is a nucleotide base that acts as a monomer in RNA. You may also see Uridine Monophosphate also referred to as 5’-uridylic acid or uridine 5 monophosphate. It is a chemical compound derived from phosphoric acid and the nucleoside uridine and is used in the body to increase the forming of cellular membranes. When taken as a supplement, Uridine Monophosphate powder may offer several potential benefits to cognitive and physical health.*

There are several Uridine Monophosphate uses, and the body uses Uridine Monophosphate in various processes like signaling the creation of neurotransmitter synapses and helps promote DNA repair and the growth of cells. Uridine is one of the four major building blocks of RNA along with cytidine, guanine, and adenosine. Uridine is created in the liver in the Uridine Monophosphate form, which is then secreted into the bloodstream. In fact, Uridine Monophosphate is pretty concentrated in beer, breast milk, various plants, and even some infant formulas contain Uridine Monophosphate. Uridine can also be found in the Uridine Triphosphate form.

Uridine Monophosphate Benefits and Uses

    • May help support cognitive function*
    • May help promote healthy sleep patterns*
    • May help support working memory*
    • May help promote neurotransmission*

Understanding Uridine Monophosphate

Uridine is believed to benefit synaptic functions by increasing phosphatidylcholine in the brain. Phosphatidylcholine is a critical component of dendritic membranes. Uridine also plays a role as a substrate in phosphatidylcholine (PC) synthesis through the CDP-choline pathway, also referred to as the Kennedy cycle. Phosphatidylethanolamine is also created in this pathway. This is important since phosphatidylethanolamine is a phospholipid that contributes to building brain cell membranes and plays a key role in neurotransmission.

Research has led scientists to believe that Uridine benefits synaptic functions via promoting phosphatidylcholine levels in the brain. Phosphatidylcholine is a key component of dendritic membranes and critical for their function. Uridine acts as a substrate during phosphatidylcholine (PC) synthesis through the CDP-choline pathway, also referred to as the Kennedy cycle. Phosphatidylethanolamine is also synthesized via this pathway. This is important since phosphatidylethanolamine is a phospholipid that helps promote the creation of brain cell membranes and plays a key role in neurotransmission.

In the Kennedy cycle, choline kinase catalyzes choline into phosphocholine consuming an ATP molecule in the process. This lets more cellular choline be converted into phosphocholine. Uridine research on rodents found that rodents appeared to show improved cognitive function when consuming a diet consisting of Uridine Monophosphate, choline and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Other studies discovered a positive influence on cognition when subjects were taking a Uridine DHA stack, meaning taking a uridine supplement and a DHA supplement together. Phosphatidylcholine is a phospholipid critical to synaptic function as well as beneficial to cellular health and function overall. Producing phosphatidylcholine requires CDP-choline, which requires uridine and cytidine. Conveniently, uridine can be converted into cytidine in the body, making this process much easier.

Uridine Monophosphate Research

Uridine Monophosphate carries a variety of potential benefits to the body and mind. Studies have observed that Uridine Monophosphate may promote memory and learning by increasing acetylcholine production. Acetylcholine is a prominent neurotransmitter. UMP may also help promote the formation of new neural synapses, which may support greater mental capacity. Results from uridine studies suggest that Uridine Monophosphate may help promote attention span and spatial learning. This may be a result of the compound’s impact on certain neurotransmitters associated with mood, motivation, and attention span. Uridine Monophosphate may also support restful sleep. Rat studies found that uridine increased slow-wave, or deep sleep particularly in sleep deprived rats. Preliminary studies show that slow-wave sleep is needed to help the brain’s recovery process from daily activities. Thus, this may be an indirect way that Uridine Monophosphate takes to help promote cognition.

Uridine Monophosphate Stack

If you have been around the nootropic space for a while, you may have read about the Mr. Happy stack. The Mr. Happy stack is a combination of Uridine, fish oil, and a choline source:

Uridine Monophosphate: Helps promote neuroplasticity whilst supporting our brain membranes.*

Triple Strength Fish Oil: The high DHA content of this budget friendly fish oil, works hand in hand with Uridine Monophosphate to help support brain membranes. This combined action helps solidify the already fantastic cognition promoting effects of Uridine Monophosphate!*

Alpha-GPC: A source of Choline really helps tie this stack together, helping to push the memory promoting effects of this stack to the next level. Alpha GPC is a great choice for a Choline source because it makes its way to the brain very readily.*

If you like this stack, you should check out our stack guides, which feature over 70 different stacks like this! Pro-tip, look under the “memory support” section of the ‘advanced stacks’ portion of the stack guide for a novel twist on this classic stack!

Uridine Monophosphate Dosage

Changed my life.... for a while

Posted by Joe on 24th Jun 2022

I've tried a lot of supplements, and even though I didn't know it at the time, Uridine turned out to be what I was looking for. Without Uridine, I feel like I'm increasingly slipping into a state of just being on autopilot, not really experiencing and taking in the sensations around me. Like all sensations are reduced by half in intensity, causing me to more strongly pursue quick dopamine-fixes (distractions), even though the satisfaction from those are also cut in half. Uridine fixes this. It makes me feel more alive, it makes me feel like it's the first time I'm really experiencing everything around me, rather than just observing them. This effect, even if it is limited in time, is worth more than money. Sadly, it is limited in time, and the effect is reduced to nothing after daily use for a few months. So I've been cycling it, with some success. I've been taking it as part of the Mr. Happy stack, and I suggest the same for others. But Uridine is definitely the star of that stack, and has clear effects when taken alone too. Maybe try Uridine first and add the rest of the stack if it works for you.

    Quality

Boost in focus and energy. I definitely can't take it right before bed like others. 100mg sublingual works best for me. Tastes just like salt. Obviously combines well with choline source and fish/krill oil. Fairly priced.

    Me smart now

This stuff really makes your mind sharp. My focus and mental clarity are pretty dang high. It's not immediate or in your face though, but you'll notice it throughout the day.

    Good product

Posted by Dan on 23rd Nov 2020

I am definitely a fan of UMP as well as the Mr. Happy Stack. I have attention issues, am prescribed a stimulant but recently took a holiday due to some abusive tendencies of it. This + Cognizin + Triple Strength Fish Oil from ND, with Vitamin B and D, and I'm usually good to go. It does help with sleep as well; I plan to continue taking this before bed when I get back on my stimulant to hopefully mitigate insomnia

This stuff is pretty good taken with fish oil. It wasn't quite what I was expecting after hearing of the "Mr. Happy Stack" but it's definitely worth a try.

    No Difference

Posted by Thom Willson on 29th May 2019

I can only assume it's because I'm not as conducive to the power of suggestion/placebo as others that I haven't felt any difference taking at LEAST 200mg of this a day for the past week. Maybe I'm supposed to avoid all other possible stimulants in the morning, such as coffee or tea or energy bars...but what's the point of that? Those are enjoyable nourishment that clearly provide better energy, focus, and drive than I can tell this stuff does. Guess I'll up the dosage - even though I'm only 170lbs - and see where the threshold is for actually feeling it, even if that means "overdoing"/feeling bad from it. ND Admin: This is not a stimulant. I am not sure where you got the idea this is supposed to replace tea or energy bars. Uridine is a cofactor in many processes in the body. It enhances acethylcholine production, improves phospholipid content in your cell membranes, up-regulates dopamine, and promotes the formation of new neuronal synapses. It's not a stimulant. In fact, it can improve sleep quality. It should not be used as a replacement for tea or energy drinks, nor are you going to strongly "feel" it on its own. It is most often used as part of a stack, like the uridine/DHA stack, also known as the Mr. Happy stack. This is more for memory and mood improvements over time, not energy.

    Mood and Focus

Posted by Mat on 24th Apr 2019

Taking 100-200 mg sublingually you can notice a real difference. One of the few Nootropics that has any perceptible change for me. I am able to home in on thoughts and ideas more clearly. I also notice more interest and contentment with my activity at the time. One of my morning favorites.

Improved my logic memory (more easy to my memory to memorise efficiently different patterns with slight differences each other). Mood has improved to a good level too.
