What is Berberine?
Appearing naturally in a bright yellow color, berberine is an alkaloid compound and ammonium salt that is extracted from a variety of plants in the berberis genus, along with goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis) and the Chinese goldthread (Coptis chinensis). All of these plants have commonly been used in Ayurveda.
Ingested orally, berberine generally has low bioavailability, which is why it is often paired with coconut oil. Coconut oil contains sodium caprate, a fatty acid that increases the effectiveness and absorption rate of berberine. Taken as a nootropic, berberine offers a variety of potential benefits to physical health and cognition.
Berberine Benefits and Uses
Berberine may benefit both physical health and mental faculties. Early studies suggest that berberine may inhibit telomerase, a protein associated with the life cycle and proliferation of cells.
How Does Berberine Work?
Research on berberine points to AMPK modulation as one of the supplement’s main mechanisms of action. AMPK, or adenosine monophosphate kinase, is an enzyme that helps cells maintain their energy and is responsible for regulating nutrients within cells.
As a dietary supplement, take 500mg of Berberine three times daily, preferably after a meal.
