Quite effective
This has been very effective in having a calming effect coupled with a mild cognitive boost. This is now part of my core regimen.
First discovered as a constituent of green tea leaves (Camellia sinensis) in 1949. L-Theanine is a non-proteinogenic amino acids and is considered a nondietary amino acid, not unlike L-Ornithine or L-Citrulline. L-Theanine is primarily known for its ability to promote relaxation without causing sleep and is often paired with Caffeine. It is thought that L-Theanine helps balance the negative effects of Caffeine that some people experience. Together, L-theanine and Caffeine are considered one of the most commonly used and popular nootropic stack options that may promote faster reaction time, numeric working memory reaction time and improved sentence verification accuracy.
L-Theanine benefits and uses may include:
L-Theanine may have positive mood-boosting effects as scientists have discovered that it changes levels of amino acids affecting serotonin and other neurotransmitters in the brain. L-Theanine may also help suppress glucocorticoids. Glucocorticoids are stress hormones that can have a negative effect on mood, memory and learning. L-Theanine may act as a glutamate antagonist and, in turn, balance the harmful effects of high glucocorticoid levels. This also suggests that L-Theanine may be neuroprotective as well.
Additionally, L-Theanine may promote better sleep. One Japanese human study where participants were given a daily L-Theanine supplement concluded that L-Theanine did not induce sleep or make them sleep longer - but rather that it improved sleep quality. Documented participant responses claimed that exhaustion recovery and feelings of being refreshed were enhanced by L-Theanine.
L-Theanine supplementation has been studied for its potential ability to reduce mental and physical stress, improve cognition, and boost mood and cognitive performance. It is also reported to promote alpha wave production in the brain. One study conducted by Unilever was able to confirm that even small amounts of L-Theanine were able to promote alpha wave production as indicated on an EEG (Electroencephalography).
As a dietary supplement, take one 200mg L-Theanine capsule daily.
L-Theanine may be synergistic with Green Tea Extract.
Nootropics Depot offers 90ct. or 180ct. jars of high quality L-Theanine Capsules (200mg). Nootropics Depot's L-Theanine has been lab-tested and verified for both product purity and identity. L-Theanine has been granted GRAS (generally recognized as safe) status in the United States.

I take one pill every evening an hour before bed. When I have coffee in the morning, I no longer get the rush and energy that I used to. Now it's just pent up energy that's hard to release. It might have improved my sleep a bit though.

It most certainly has an effect when I take it. I take one pill about an hour before going to bed. Not sure if it improves my sleep quality - maybe. What I have noticed, however, is that my morning coffee doesn't hit like it used to - I used to have a rush that lasted for about 30min when I had coffee after some time not drinking it. Now I feel like I have this barely perceptional energy locked within me and I have trouble letting it out and it makes me want to scream - in a good way but I'd rather have the previous effect back. So, I suppose, it definitely has an effect on caffeine even if I take it the previous evening before bed, it still remains in my body to do what it does with caffeine the next morning.
Why are the caps only available in 200mg when on your loose powder it recommends 100mg twice a day? I want to try take this together with Melatonin for sleep but it's too much for me
This is the only supplement I've taken that I feel sure helps, which is funny, because it is subtle. When I started taking it, I was stressed from work, and it made me feel like I could take on the stressors of the day without getting overwhelmed. I take it every morning with caffeine.
L-theanine was the first "nootropic" I discovered back in 2016. Caffeine had always been problematic for me. A single cup of coffee would give me anxiety and jitters for the rest of the day. Turns out I've got a few genetic markers indicating that my body doesn't handle caffeine super well (gs157, rs762551, rs4822492). While l-theanine doesn't completely rid me of those issues, it makes caffeine consumption MUCH more tolerable for me. I've recommended l-theanine (and only the ND brand) to anyone who tells me caffeine gives them anxiety. And those that try it are amazed that it provides a noticeable reduction in negative effects after caffeine consumption. L-theanine is my first love and something I've relied on over the last 6 years whenever I want to have a cup of coffee. Can't recommend it enough. I also take l-theanine before bed as a sleep aid from time to time, and it helps there as well.
I bought these to take in a stack with caffeine and aniracetem among others and even after the first or second time taking it I could tell that it very efficiently took the edge off of the jitteriness that caffeine causes! It also made my heart rate feel less off the charts and slowed down a lot compared to drinking caffeine on its own.
Thanks!
Take two of these and it feels like a low dose of a anxioloytic without any side effects. Also gets me to sleep very fast
It's my first time to use L-Theanine on its own. I can feel the effect about an hour after I take it. Highly recommend it.
Good products helps with neurological support and focus. Definitely a product I would use this two or three times a week and find it provides good support.
I find this to be an extremely effective and gentle solution to fall asleep and wake restfully! Not only is it an economical solution, but I know it's just strong enough to take even if I can't commit to a whole 8 hours of sleep!
Excellent Nootropic for relaxing and stress-free evening and combined with Melatonin leads to a very good sleep cycle.
Excellent product for an anxious household.
Good product overall.
Incredibly high and consistent quality. For the amount, it's also way cheaper than anything on Amazon or other sites.
Always good and consistent Quality Theanine.
Top-notch and high-quality product.
Works just as well as other L-Theanine products sold elsewhere and is cheaper too.
Hubby and I take this supplement often. A few years now. It has helped out a lot. That little extra kick in energy and mental focus is great. I take mine with coffee in the morning a few days a week. Really helps cure the Mondays. Clear minded and ready for solutions with this one.
