Magnesium Glycinate Capsules

Magnesium is a vital mineral that is used in many biological processes. For example, it is a cofactor in more than 300 enzyme systems! It is also one of the most common minerals that we are deficient in so it is important to take a high quality Magnesium supplement. This however, is not the easiest thing to find, as Magnesium supplements are notorious for poor absorption. There are a few different factors that cause this. The main one appears to be due to its physical properties. Most of the Magnesium that we ingest is absorbed in our small intestines through small spaces called tight junctions. Absorption through tight junctions is dependent largely on the size of the compound, its solubility, and its pH. Unfortunatey, these three issues all make it very hard for Magnesium we consume to be adequately absorbed.

Absorbing a Magnesium Supplement

Magnesium, when it comes into contact with water, attracts a large amount of water molecules which arrange around the Magnesium ion. This is known as the hydration shell. The hydration shell physically makes Magnesium bigger which, in turn, makes it far more difficult for it to pass through tight junctions in our small intestines. Compared to Calcium, Magnesium has a much larger hydration shell, which causes two issues:

  1. Magnesium has a much more difficult time being absorbed by our bodies because of its large hydration shell. So, when Magnesium and Calcium are consumed at the same time, they compete for absorption. This is problematic because Calcium will generally have the upper hand due to its much smaller hydration shell. This limits the amount of Magnesium that can be absorbed by our bodies.
  2. Magnesium increases pH levels at tight junctions when ingested in supplemental dosages. The reason that this is an issue is because there are proteins in the tight junctions called Claudins that strip Magnesium of its hydration shell allowing it to pass through the tight junction. However, as pH increases, Claudins become less and less active. In turn, Magnesium limits its own absorption by gradually increasing intestinal pH.

Chelated Magnesium Glycinate Benefits

The benefits of taking a chelated Magnesium Glycinate supplement is where Glycine comes in as an excellent pH buffer. When chelating Magnesium with Glycine, the rise in pH at tight junctions is largely reduced. This leads to significantly improved Magnesium absorption. The Glycine in theory may also reduce the size of the Magnesium hydration shell and in addition to this, may allow Magnesium to be transported through amino acid transport systems. Magnesium is also fairly reactive and can react with Phytates that are present in our diet. Magnesium that has reacted with Phytates is practically impossible to absorb and this is highly problematic because Phytates are fairly prevalent in foods that contain large amounts of Magnesium, such as almonds and spinach. Chelating Magnesium with Glycinate appears to reduce the reactivity of Magnesium with Phytates. This enhances its bioavailability even when it is taken alongside food.

Is This Magnesium Glycinate Supplement Fully Chelated?

Yes, these Magnesium Glycinate capsules are fully chelated. Our Magnesium Glycinate Capsules have not been buffered with Magnesium oxide.

How Magnesium Glycinate Benefits Sleep

The final benefit of Magnesium Glycinate is that it can increase the likelihood of L-Glycine making it to the brain. What makes this notable is that L-Glycine may significantly enhance sleep quality (as can Magnesium itself). In othe words, Magnesium Glycinate is arguably the best Magnesium when it comes to enhancing overall sleep quality.

Magnesium Glycinate Dosage for Capsules

As a dietary supplement, take two 800mg Magnesium Glycinate capsules once daily.

    Ok but an FYI

Posted by JP on 23rd May 2024

Picked this product up initially to help with sleep. The good thing about it was learning I'm a small percent of the population with a sensitivity to glycinate (it kept me awake at night). It was ok switching to taking it in the morning. However, the awesome magnesium that works for me at night is Magtein (l-threonate).

Good, but make a smaller dose please

Posted by Patrick on 18th Jan 2024

I recently began taking this version of Magnesium Glycinate and really like it. In general, I prefer this form of ingestible magnesium to others because it's not as hard on my gut. I haven't confirmed with labs, but I assume it's doing its job, especially because I'm having side-effects. Here's the catch, the recommended dose for magnesium glycinate is 400mg, but this was sold at 800mg. Even the upper tolerable limit is no more than 400mg. After that you're looking at potential toxicity and side effects, which I've experienced. I like the product more than alternatives, but I wish it came in a lower dose that did not promise toxicity and side effects. They could be alleviated if this was in pill format that I could cut in half rather than capsule, but trying to pry apart capsules every morning is tedious and imprecise...I tried. In the meantime, I've been taking one every other day so my side-effects only happen on the day I take the pill. When I purchased this, there were no lower dosed capsules, and I am hoping that perhaps it is because they were out of stock, but I'm not sure. Every paper I've read says anything higher than 400mg/day is asking for trouble. I guess I/m confused why a smaller dose isn't available since it't recommended at lower doses, and can be more personalizable for each person's need if there were 200mg or 400mg capsules. Taking these is easier on my gut than alternative, but could be better. If you're looking for magnesium supplements, this works, and the side effects are mild. I'm also writing this review hoping that the management at nootropics depot either offers an in-site explanation why their magnesium capsule doses are higher than the maximum tolerable dose (because I've been wrong many times and am happy to admit it to learn) or else offer a smaller capsule for those of us that don't want magnesium to hit our guts like a sledgehammer. ND Admin: You are confusing elemental magnesium doses with the dose of magnesium glycinate itself. Magnesium glycinate is roughly 14% elemental magnesium. This means each capsule is giving you a little over 100mg elemental magnesium. The RDI for magnesium is 400mg/day elemental. You would need to take 4 capsules of our magnesium glycinate to reach that.

Posted by anthony Cabrera on 18th Dec 2021

I've been buying this for about a year now and it does what I need it to. I don't get enough Mag in my diet so this is a great way to supplement the rest. Just a great working product overall and for the price you can't go wrong. ND is 10/10

    Reliable and Cheap

Posted by Colin on 11th Jun 2021

My favorite form of magnesium. No laxative effects that I can notice, fairly cheap, and works like a charm. As a lifter, I often get muscle cramps if I don't have enough magnesium and this really helps to prevent those.

    Works Great for Sleep

Posted by Aaron on 8th May 2021

I've struggled with sleep maintenance insomnia for a long time. Every night I've been using a stack of L-Tryptophan, Iron, and Magnesium Malate for a few months now. Recently, I swapped out the Magnesium Malate for Nootropic Depot's Magnesium Glycinate and it has UNDOUBTEDLY increased my sleep time by an average of 0.5 to 1 hr per night (I track sleep data using FitBit). Thank you ND for another great product!

    A staple

Posted by PS on 6th May 2021

I take this magnesium before bed and it has consistently helped the quality of my sleep. Don't expect it to fix problems it isn't meant to fix -- if you have an undiagnosed or untreated sleep disorder, you need to treat that first. After that, magnesium glycinate is a great bonus boost to sleep quality, and Nootropic Depot has the best quality I've come across so far.
