What is Magnesium Glycinate Powder?

Magnesium is a vital mineral that is used in many biological processes. For example, it is a cofactor in more than 300 enzyme systems! It is also one of the most common minerals that people are deficient in so it is important to take a good Magnesium supplement. This is not the easiest thing to find though as Magnesium supplements are plagued by bad absorption and there are a few different reasons for this. The main cause is magnesium's physical properties. Most of the Magnesium that we ingest is absorbed in our small intestines through small spaces called tight junctions. Absorption through tight junctions is dependent largely on the size of the compound, its solubility, and its pH. These three issues all make it very hard for Magnesium to be absorbed.

Absorbing a Magnesium Supplement

Magnesium, when it comes into contact with water, attracts a large amount of water molecules which arrange around the Magnesium ion, this is referred to as a hydration shell. The hydration shell physically makes Magnesium bigger which makes it harder for it to pass through tight junctions in the small intestines. Compared to Calcium, Magnesium has a much larger hydration shell, which causes two issues, the first being that Magnesium has a much harder time being absorbed due to its large hydration shell and the second issue is that when Magnesium and Calcium are coingested, then they are going to compete for absorption, which is problematic because Calcium will generally have the upper hand due to its much smaller hydration shell, which will limit the amount of Magnesium that can be absorbed.

The second major issue that makes things even more complicated is that Magnesium increases pH levels at tight junctions when ingested in supplemental dosages. This is problematic because there are proteins in the tight junctions called Claudins that strip Magnesium of its hydration shell allowing it to pass through the tight junction. However, as pH increases, Claudins become less and less active. As a result, Magnesium limits its own absorption by gradually increasing intestinal pH.

Benefits of Magnesium Glycinate Powder

The benefits of taking a Magnesium Glycinate supplement is where Glycine comes in as an excellent pH buffer. By chelating Magnesium with Glycine, the rise in pH at tight junctions is largely negated, leading to significantly better Magnesium absorption. The Glycine in theory can also decrease the size of the Magnesium hydration shell and in addition to this, may allow Magnesium to be transported through amino acid transport systems. Magnesium is also fairly reactive and can react with Phytates that are present in our diet. Magnesium that has reacted with Phytates is practically impossible to absorb and this is highly problematic because Phytates are fairly prevalent in foods that contain large amounts of Magnesium, such as almonds and spinach. Chelating Magnesium with Glycinate, appears to reduce the reactivity of Magnesium with Phytates, thus enhancing its bioavailability even when it is taken alongside food.

Supplementing Magnesium Glycinate for Sleep Support

The final benefit of Magnesium Glycinate, is that it can increase the likelihood of L-Glycine making it to the brain. This is interesting, because L-Glycine may support sleep quality and so can Magnesium itself. Thus, Magnesium Glycinate is arguably the best form of Magnesium when it comes to supporting sleep quality.

Is This Magnesium Glycinate Supplement Fully Chelated?

Yes, this Magnesium Glycinate powder is fully chelated. It is not buffered with Magnesium oxide.

Effective, calming, but OMG THE TASTE

Posted by Jimmy Hudson on 30th Nov 2020

You thought bacopa was bad tasting, you thought ksm was bad... Just wait until you try this, it tastes like someone farted and mixed the fart gas with weird old hot rotten steak that's been left out in the sun. Besides that, it is actually pretty effective, which is why I give it 5 stars.

Terrible taste, but the best cost x benefit for Mg

Posted by Arthur on 6th Nov 2020

This product is incredible: a cheap way to get Mg and glycine is a magical substance. Overall, you sleep much better. However, I would get the capsules, as the taste is unbereable. Giving 5 stars because I encapsulate my nootropics, but I would give a 4 stars if I had to take it everyday with water.

Bad taste in exchange for great results

Posted by Hugo Gonzalez on 28th Aug 2020

This magneisum has been the best I have taken in regards to effectiveness. I have tried ither brands and left disappointed possibly because of the fillers preventing the magnesium to absorb effeciently. I have been able to get more sleep without waking up and I get deeper sleep. Also question for admin, should this taste bad? It tastes like plastic almost, its hard to explain the flavor its just a potent non-natural kind of taste. No bad smell it just tastes bad.

    High quality magnesium

Noticeable improvements in sleep quality. Helps calm down the mind and body before bed. Price for the powdered version affordable, too.

Very useful staple of my suppl. profile

Posted by Yuri Garcia on 23rd Apr 2020

"Off the shelf" MgGly brands I've used these years dissolve faster than NDs' product but at double the price. I find even prolonged stirring can leave some pasty flakes in my cup. Shaking the solution in a closed vessel takes care of that completely. Rinses easily.

    Perfect Relaxation

Posted by Nathan Couch on 9th Mar 2020

I take 250mg 2x a day and 1g before bed. The smaller amounts during the day helps me calm down and makes my body feel relaxed, whereas the gram before bed truly helps me wind down and sleep all the way through the night. It’s definitely top dog in my nighttime stack and pairs well with Ashwagandha Sensoril and Cyracos Lemon Balm Extract!

    Mg Glycinate Powder

Posted by John Crocker on 11th Jan 2020

I had a terrible time getting the order sorted out with several e-mails and eventual help from the chief accountant of the company. There was not enough of the product in stock to warrant free postage so I was given a discount code. Then the accountant offered a code for free postage and the discount was nullified. It took ages for the delivery with inordinate amount of time spent somewhere in Germany on the way. I had to go and pick it up from the post office in the centre of the city because it came by ordinary mail - not DHL at this end. The instructions on the powder give advice on quantities but there is no measuring spoon in the container so I had to weigh and now make do with a salt spoon from another product. It holds 700mg - so about half the daily dose. Should there not be a small plastic spoon in the large plastic container to help the user? As far as whether the powder works for me - I have yet to find out definitively. It doesn't taste good but I hope it's OK to mix in a cold drink. No instructions for this. ND Admin: Again, we are sorry for the confusion. The shipping issued happened because your post code in Taiwan matched a code in the United States. So our systems were thinking it needed to verify your address in the US, but you were in Taiwan. The strange error is already being looked at by our card processing bank. So hopefully that will not be an issue going forward. Regarding scoops, they are not accurate forms of measurement. We feel including scoops promotes the idea that you don't need a scale, which cannot be further from the truth. Accuracy matters. A 2 cent plastic scoop from China should not be what our customers use to accurately dose their powders. A milligram scale is needed for accuracy. We now offer our own scale for customers, or they can purchase another milligram scale elsewhere if they prefer, but a scale is absolutely necessary.

    Great Magnesium

Among the top forms of magnesium. An essential to any supplementation stack, magnesium is needed every time the heart contracts. Deficiency is hugely widespread among people.
