CoQH-CF uses a very high-quality form of Ubiquinol made by Kaneka. Kaneka produces this Ubiquinol from yeast derived Ubiquinone resulting in a bio-identical Ubiquinol supplement. In isolation, Kaneka Ubiquinol has already been shown to have good bioavailability, however, Soft Gel Technologies figured out how to further enhance this already impressive bioavailability. The technology behind the bioavailability enhancement is very well thought out and has been shown to drastically enhance Ubiquinol absorption.

The first step in enhancing Ubiquinol CoQ10 bioavailability involves controlling the crystallization of Ubiquinol CoQ10. The size of the crystals that Ubiquinol CoQ10 can form, in combination with its low water solubility, means that crystal size and shape will drastically affect bioavailability. There are multiple strategies that are used to overcome this limitation such as micronizing the powder or turning it into a paste. However, none of these methods fully eliminate the crystals in Ubiquinol CoQ10, and due to this, maximum bioavailability cannot be achieved. The best way to take crystal size and form out of the equation is to fully solvate the Ubiquinol CoQ10. This is quite hard, however, as Ubiquinol is not soluble in most common solvents such as water or glycerin. Soft Gel Technologies looked towards citrus fruits for a solution and landed on a unique citrus-based solvent called D-Limonene.

What is D-Limonene And Why Is It An CoQH-CF Ingredient?

D-Limonene is a terpene that is found in high concentrations in the peels of various citrus fruits. Lemons contain a particularly high concentration of D-Limonene and this is also where D-Limonene gets its name from. It’s safe for human consumption and even has some unique benefits of its own. D-Limonene may help promote liver health and metabolic health while also having a minor calming and stress-regulation effect. More importantly however, D-Limonene is a fantastic natural solvent that can be used to fully solvate Ubiquinol CoQ10 crystals. A single-blind placebo-controlled study published in Regulatory Toxicology and Pharmacology found that doses of up to 300 mg of ubiquinol were safe and bioavailable. In the first phase of the study, 15 healthy subjects were administered a single dose of either 150 mg or 300 mg of Kaneka QH™. The treatment:

• Showed significant absorption in the gastrointestinal tract after both doses.
• Achieved peak plasma CoQ10 levels (1.88 µg/ml for the low dose and 3.19 µg/ml for the high dose) 6 hours after administration.

A longer phase of the study followed 78 healthy subjects who took three different doses of Kaneka QH™ (90 mg, 150 mg, or 300 mg) or a placebo for 4 weeks. The results showed that:
• CoQ10 levels rose in a dose-dependent fashion for the entire treatment period — reaching a peak plasma concentration of 7 µg/ml at 28 days for the 300-mg group.
• CoQ10 levels approached peak plasma levels after two weeks and then rose more slowly for another two weeks.
• Once supplementation ceased, plasma CoQ10 levels dropped back to baseline levels after two weeks, indicating the need for ongoing supplementation.

CoQH-CF May Support Healthy Levels of Oxidation

Ubiquinol is naturally present in our bodies and one of its main purposes is to minimize the impacts of oxidative stress. Under normal conditions, this means that we are protected from a host of oxidative processes, which can have deleterious effects on our bodies and brains. As we age CoQ10 levels decline, and more specifically, our bodies have a harder time converting Ubiquinone into Ubiquinol. Since Ubiquinol is the main oxidation-regulating form of CoQ10, decreased levels of Ubiquinol could mean an increase in oxidative stress.

Researchers compared the oral bioavailability of a single dose of 100 mg of
CoQH-CF® (as a hermetically sealed softgel) versus a single dose of 100 mg
of standard CoQ10 crystalline powder (in a two-piece hard shell). Ten subjects
over 60 years of age participated in this randomized, double-blind, two-arm crossover human clinical trial published in the Journal of Functional Foods.

Compared to CoQ10 crystalline powder, supplementation with CoQH-CF® achieved:

• Significantly higher plasma concentrations of CoQ10 at 5, 6, 8, 12, 24, 48 and 72 hours post-dose.
• 4.3x higher plasma area under the curve of reduced and total CoQ10.
• 3.3x higher plasma area under the curve of oxidized CoQ10.
• Faster peak blood levels of CoQ10, with total CoQ10 reaching maximum plasma concentrations 15.5 ± 29.6 hours after supplementation, versus 26.5 ± 25.8 for CoQ10 crystalline powder.

The researchers concluded that “…reduced Coenzyme Q10 liquid softgel formulation was found to be superior to the commercial formulation of Coenzyme Q10 for bioavailability."
